I thought this was a pencil mark in the center of this stamp, and maybe it is, but I thought I would ask for opinions.

Could be a marking identifying the owner, a very common thing to do especially in Europe. Sometimes a small inkstamp is used for this purpose. When I state it is very common I really meant it was very common!
