So my mom recently gave me a bunch of stamp collections, bought between 84 and 93, that I guess were supposed to be a kind of nest egg for me. Trying to get an idea what they're worth, and where this really isn't my thing, kinda clueless. Best I've come up with based on prelim research is that all years total would be worth around 450-600. All unopened and still in shrink wrap, save 92 because there were 2 extra envelopes with more stamps in them. Also wondering if there are any individual stamps in the collections that might be worth something significant on their own (probably not I'm guessing, but you never know). Thanks for your help.

If "nest egg" means investment - that won't be the case. There is limited market for them because of the weight. I have ten in my basement with the postage taken out and used. |

Most of these that I see on ebay are asking 50 -100 percent of original cost. Most of the sellers get them at auction for 10-20 percent of original cost. They buy them in bulk or huge lots. I have one of every book that was produced. I like them for the history and stories associated with each stamp. Just recently I have substituted all the mint stamps for nice cancelled used copies. This is not as easy to do nowadays. Nice used versions can be difficult to find. It has turned into an enjoyable project and it adds a different look to my annual collections. I also add used blocks and souvenir sheets for added eye candy. |

For example. I have 1990 in hand. I have the original packaging that I keep inside the book. It says the purchase price was $26.95 with the actual face value of the stamps at $24.62. So they charged $2.33 for the hard cover book. You will have to take all your books and add up the face value and then estimate the added book cost. The newer books will probably have a higher cost due to the size and added pages. Here are a few I found. 2012 $66.95. 2011 $64.95 2010 $62.95 2009 $59.95 2008 $59.95. I believe the last time I looked at Canada Post website they have them listed back to 2001. |

The Unitrade catalog lists the annual collections, along with their souvenir card predecessors. The only one that seems to command a significant value over the cost is the 1974 annual collection. Jerry |

He asked for original cost of purchase. Not what they are listed for in Unitrade. |

A couple of years ago, I bought a full run of all Souvenir Collections. I paid about 80% of the face value of the STAMPS (not the original sale value at time of purchase), with a premium for the 1974 first edition only. I know I overpaid somewhat based on various auction results, but I weighed that against the chance to get all of them at once. My sole purpose is to have a reference for my children, should they continue to show interest in stamp collecting. If not, I've got a nice pile of postage for less than face value. I'll win big time either way! |

xyyz - there is confusion here about the meaning of "face value." The cost of the book is NOT normally part of "face value" for annual collections. |

CanadaStamp. you are correct. That is why in my first line I stated the face value minus Canada Post selling price for the complete book and stamps. $26.95 - $24.62 (face value of stamps) = $2.33 cost of book alone. CP really does not charge much for the book if you break it all down. BTW, I have never seen a souvenir collection come any where near the value that Unitrade has them listed at. Especially the 1974. I have bought many copies of the 74 for peanuts. |

The 1988 book contains a coil pair of the 37c Parliament Coil. If you are lucky and yours is on Rolland paper, is very scarce in mint condition. Less than 200 are known to exist. Copies were included in some of the 1988 Annual Souvenir Collections - I believe all known pairs came from the collections. Catalogue value is over $200 for the pair. |

Bee See, My 1988 is original and all stamps mint. How do I tell if it is Rolland paper? 37 cent blue coil stacked one up on the other.
Thanks. |

BeeSee, I saw it mentioned on your informative website.
Do you know if it "glows" differently under either long-wavelength or short-wavelength UV light? |

KHJ, I don't remember, I will check when I get home. I was lucky, in that my 1988 Album obtained the variety.
I will also scan the reverse of the actual coils, as the above examples are from other stamps in the set. |
