It just gets me when people pencil the scott number on the back of a stamp. Yes it is nice to know what stamp we have but I think it makes it less valuable. Thank you rant over.

Yes, carabop, but have you seen anyone do this in your lifetime?

There are so many practices of a century ago that bring gasps today.

I think that the penciling-on-the-gum thing survived into the 1950s, but will happily stand corrected.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Just got a stamp in the mail with it on, have no clue when it penciled on the stamp though as it is a j3 postage due stamp so could of been put on there then but I would of thought if put on in the 50's or earlier it would be a bit faded penciling.

pet peeve -------Sellers who cry about ebay .......I couldn't count the number of ebay sellers ,who complain about someone who rip them off .But they would not spend a nickel of their money to make a group that would track these crooks and con-artist. They want to make money but it is someone else that should protect them for free.

That is a good pet peeve too floortrader. I don't buy to many stamps and this particular one was a freebie to me so I really shouldn't complain at all. I put it away now face up so can't see the pencil mark. I'm good now LOL

Hi,
IMO, writing on the back of stamps was pretty common in the 40s-50s and not so much today.

My pet peeve is picking up a nice auctioned album and finding the stamps attached with "must soak to remove" hinges.

I hate when the Scott info is written on the front of a cover. Doing that just doesn't make sense in any era.

So, how do you feel about the markings put on the back of the British Guiana 1c Magenta by the previous owners?

I think if you could put your name on the back of the British Guyana red you would indeed . I believe you would disagree with here yo make your point but I bet you would ? I sill jot numbers on the backs of stamps but I agree on writing all over the fronts of covers . It's just unsightly.

One of my biggest pet peeves is with ebay sellers that do not give you a feedback until after you give them one! If you pay my bill immediately I should get feedback immediately!

If it's a renowned expertizer than I'd think it might inflate the value ?
