The right part of the stamp honoring the National Guard shows their members helping in times of flooding (1953). Does anyone know who did the artwork?

This 1918 Belgian charity seal for its war-wounded veterans shows the flooding at the Battle of Yser. Belgium strategically flooded the area to halt the German advance. This strategy was successful and the Allies held the line until 1918.

A decorative minisheet for the Saar flood 1947-8; see page one for the other stamps on the same flood. This one shows Saarlouis inundated. Note f for Francs, the Saar was at that time French.

Possibly the first documented flood was painted in the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, early 16th century. The stamps were issued after restoration; several other countries have also issued stamps for the occasion.

Another painting of a flood, the one by Alfred Sisley, has been shown on stamps of several countries. The inundation of Port Marley, not far from Paris, was painted in 1872. The Seine rose over its banks but the building is still there and is marked by a plaque showing the painting.

A young artist did the painting for the Italian stamp commemorating the flood of Florence in 1966. Helpers rescuing the treasures of the city are shown with angel's wings. They were called Mud Angels.

Inundation, a hurricane off the Florida coast, an erupting volcano and forest fires are the disasters depicted on this Togolese nature conservation souvenir sheet, 2011. Even endangered carnivorous plants are part of it.

Togo issued another "flood stamp" with an unusual plant: Tacca chantrieri, also known as the bat flower.



As sea levels rise, Togo will become increasingly more affected by floods, here 2010:

One in a booklet of 8 stamps honoring the Red Cross, France 2015. An elderly couple is being rescued from flood waters. One of the areas frequently flooded in France is the Somme valley, although it has flood plains.

The Solomon Islands suffered from a devastating, flooding storm in 2014. The minisheet commemorates the help of the Rotary, and their support of the school system, the youngster has a new pencil. (See also the earlier post of a sheet from Niger.)

One stamp in a booklet of 12 French stamps dedicated to the topic of water, 2010, states that approximately 5 million € need to be invested in protection against floods.

The Société internationale de sauvetage du Léman (SISL) is a Swiss/French organization of volunteers who rescue people in distress, primarily on and around Lake Geneva. It has been active since 1885.
