I understand the Alaska Cruise Picture Postage stamp. It is the rarest of all modern Canadian stamps with proper "in period" use.

The others surprise me a bit, though it has not been uncommon for the older Picture Postage issues (especially used) to sell in the $20 range over the past few years.

They ARE very popular, worldwide, not just in Canada.

As always, it is the law of supply and demand. I wouldn't laugh. I wish I had a bunch of these myself.

My guess is that these will eventually go the way of "Beanie Babies" as more are produced. However, the early ones may very well hold their value as they are not as common as people think.

It seems that the stamps selling for the most are from the first design, with the picture applied as a sticker. I agree, 3Dadeo, the older issued will hold some sort of value, though not up there with the value some have sold for.

Saw this thread rather later than usual.

Look at the original link from Bee See. The other groups and singles 'picture postage' persinalized stamps went for between $86 to $100 each.

Amazing. I thought years and years ago I had paid a lot for my own most expensive picture postage stamp at the time. Worthwhile price I thought too.

The wave of the future, which they indeed turned out to be worldwide.

However, to give credit to supply and demand also, most of the bidding on the items was from two separate bidders, one I had sold to in the past and one newer one.

They do draw a passionate audience. Rekindles my collecting spirt too!

I think I am missing the joke entirely. People are actually buying these used as "unique" stamps?

Not a joke, Tom. People actually collect these - and spend a great deal of money on them! Londonbus1 has some tales to tell about his experiences creating stamps and the offers he has received for them ...

My cat picture stamp has an angle and seeming energy movement that I like.

The joke is that people actually like the stamps to use to add to their covers and envelopes. Dresses them up.

Other stamps, more officially produced, matching the person's or company's preference at the time of mailing, perhaps do exist but would not be available at that time.

They cost more in money but add more in personal energy or feeling.

From the 1d black to this. I found these quite upsetting - probably the least appealing stamps I've seen. They should come with a health warning.

One should not demean someone else's collection desires but holy crap. A picture of someone's goldfish or something on a stamp and people will pay good money for it? And I am still totally lost as to what you guys are talking about concerning that Alaska Cruise stamp. It's just a stamp with a picture of some guy on a cruise ship. He probably has a drawer full of them. If not, he can make more (assuming the program is still running). I still think you guys are joking around with us new guys about these stamps.

TomSwift - no joke.

First, the Alaska Cruise stamps were a special issue by Canada Post. They were only sold on a certain Alaska cruise and a very limited print run. This was a first foray into personalized stamps. The idea was that you could take a picture of yourself, etc on the cruise and then apply that picture (not sure how difficult the process) to the stamps and use them to send mail.

A sheet (mint) costs between $45 - 75 on ebay last I checked. I had one from a while back and sold it for $48.

The other personalized stamps have had many series. The newest ones are easy for anyone. Just send money and a picture to Canada Post and they will put it on a sheet of stamps and send it back (cost is more than face value of course).

The early ones (the ones that go for high $ amounts) are the ones where you were given a stamp with a frame only. You had to mail a picture you wanted on the stamp and they would send you back labels to stick onto the frame.
These personalized stamps (used) are not that easy to find, and yes they might be a goldfish, but usually people.

I agree that I have no interest in stamps with strangers on them, however, I found one in a lot and sold it for good $. So no joke - however probably a very limited market. Mine had 3 bidders.

I wrote it here just the other day.....

In 2004, Israel issued a 'Design a Stamp' generic stamp and offered visitors to the National Exhibition of that year the chance to make their own design for the central portion.
Only two sheets of 15 [14 stamps and 1 label] were allowed for each design. I made three designs. It worked out at about $1 for each stamp.
One design was for the upcoming wedding of my Stepdaughter to use on her invitations. I kept back one stamp which I sold in 2011 for $115.
The second design was made for franking letters to my Dear Mother and aunts in the UK and had their names on them. I kept a few mint copies back and still have them. I also managed to find a few on cover.
The third design is my Avatar and again, I used most on my mail to family and friends.I kept only a centre label block. I realise now it was a naive mistake ! . Or was it ?

A very kind collector once sent me a T-Shirt with this avatar on it as a birthday gift. In 2008, I wore it to the 'Israel 2008, World Stamp Championship' in Tel Aviv and was inundated with questions about the stamps and offers to buy the remaining stock. I was taken aback by the popularity in this tiny nation of real personalized stamps [of which there are few] and the sums of money they can make.
At the show I was offered over $150 for the only example I have managed to find on cover.

Yesterday, I returned from a very difficult and tiring UK trip. Whilst cleaning out the apartment of my dear departed Aunt [inscribed on the 2nd design] I found a cut-out from an envelope with used copies of both the 2nd and 3rd designs plus a High value block of Israel stamps. What a find !

I wonder how much that might fetch when I next wear my T-shirt to an Exhibition ??!

Now I'm off to look for some old letters from Canada to see if I have a fortune hidden away !
