purchased a US BOB collection with basically a little of everything. These 5 stamps were in an envelope with a ? on them.

The first two look like Japan stamps but have English written Telegraphs. Any thought to where to locate them in a catalog?

The next 2 appear also to be japan stamps but once again have local post in English. Any thought to these?

The last stamp in this envelope was this 1 stamp which appears to be Japan but was unable to locate. Any thoughts or guidance?

Thank you for your time and guidance.
Respectfully,
Richard

The first 2 are actually 1885 Telegraph stamps. I only have the Yvert et Tellier catalog, which gives the numbers Telegraph 6 and 8. No idea of the current value.
The 5th looks as a tax stamp.

Thank you Cursus. The first two you mentioned are telegraph stamps. Do they fall under Japan telegraphs stamps or were they a US occupation somehow and thus US related?

Thanks for the guidance.

Well, as long as I know, in 1885, the US were not occupying Japan... It was 60 years later...

Hi, just found this topic and would like to add some comments on Telegraph stamps;

The first and second stamps are, as Cursus mentioned, Telegraph stamps. They are issued in 1885 and discontinued in March 31, 1888 (utilization halted in Feb. 28, 1890).

Telegraph stamps were, of course, used to pay the telegraph fee. The interesting thing about these tiny cute stamps are the variation of the perforation and the dedicated telegraph cancels (Small Double Circle Telegraph Marks).

One can find the same perforation then used for UPU Koban and New Koban stamps, i.e. 8 1/2, 10, 11L (large hole) and 13. Some combination perfs also exist. I found the basic 4 perforations in my stock book.

After April 1, 1888, the telegraph fee were paid by postage stamps, so the telegraph cancels could be found on Koban stamps since then (again some from my stock book). The telegraph cancel could be subdivided into eight major types and numerous variations, thus another interesting thing to play around with in Japanese philately.

Happy collecting !
