Among airmail stamps, C76 is the most cacheted FDC ever. Mellone's recognizes over 250 different FDC cachets. Among the airmail stamps, nothing else comes even close.

I do not have enough experience with regular US postage (or non US, for that matter) to know whether C76 is unique in this regard or not. Any FDC experts out there know of any other FDC's that might exceed the number of cachets known for the "First Man on the Moon" stamp?

Well, if Mystic Stamp Co. is to be believed, "The First Day Cover [for C76] was the most popular ever."

But now I have another question. The announcement for C76 in the US Postal Bulletin said that the stamp would be "printed from the die which actually landed on the moon." What does this mean? The iconic image reproduced on the stamp had not yet taken place when Apollo 11 was launched. So I presume that the die was blank, and not yet engraved. Is there another explanation?

Update: It was engraved. Some good background, including an interview with the designer, here. It says that more covers were produced for this stamp, which is not quite the same thing as saying "the most cachets." Comparison is made to the Elvis stamp. Would anyone have any idea how many cachets were issued with the Elvis stamp?

There are also an uncountable number of one of a kind and handful of a kind first day cover cachets for this stamp that were hand made by collectors. These are harder to decide if the cachets were actually made at the time, or if someone has simply taken an uncacheted FDC and drawn a hand made cachet yesterday.

By my count, 47 of the 252 cataloged by Mellone are listed as "Designer unknown." But with 9 million covers produced, you are no doubt right that there are many more.

I only have a few covers for this issue. It is not one that I try to get everything I can. My real interest is in aviation themed stamps, not space stamps. I just have a few of these because I collect all US Airmail stamps, and C76 would thus be part of the collection. I was just researching the background of C76 because I have my US airmail cover albums arranged somewhat thematically, rather than by Scott # and write up a brief background of each stamp in the collection.
