Hello all, I have been given the task of figuring out what a stamp collection is worth. I don't know much about stamps. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I made a youtube video in high definition and stopped for a moment over each envelope. The video is 5 minutes long, best viewed in 1080 hd full screen and please pause the video when I hold the camera still over each envelope/stamp to see what it is.
I figured this was the best way for people to see what I had and tell me if its anything special. Im really looking to get at what the whole collection/album is worth; as the man who gave me the task wants the album/collection sold. Im new to stamps. Thanks again. Heres the link to the video:
Kevin, unfortunately most of us don't have the time (or patience) to watch a 5 minute video :). I looked at the first few pages of your album and did not see anything of particular value - what I saw were quite common FDCs. Your early FDCs without cachets are usually sold for $2-$3 each.
Your best bet is to look them up them on e-bay sold listings to get a general idea of worth. FDC listings are broken down into eras, so you can quite easily spot the ones you have.
I watched our video and found it very clever. These are mostly common but there are a few more desirable covers amongst them especially the "National park series" and especially if they are imperforate (having no perforations) Also, the James Farley Byrd's Arctic expedition imperforate might fetch a few extra dollars at an online auction. These are common but having said that they are collectable. I would say value wise in the area of 25.00 - $50.00 dollars if you sell them separately and about the same as a collection. I wish I could be of more help and my "appraisal" was very generous but if you take your time and make clear scans from a flatbed scanner (not camera pictures) you shouldn't have too much trouble selling them. I hope this helps.
On a side note that one cover with the Washing D.C. cancel and bearing the Back of Book stamp Scott #CE2 you might want to look into further. It looks like this ->
Also pay attention to the "reds" of the 1920's and that Scott #821 Abram Lincoln FDC from the "Prexi" series too. Best wishes. Respectfully -Jeff
This one might be worth checking out. As a cacheted FDC it has a 2013 catalog value of $60 (although it would likely be less on the secondary market). Based on the photo it would appear to be unaddressed and, if so, it would add a premium to its value.
Another quick scan through shows a #855 (baseball) FDC which also may be of value, but like I said, the OP needs to further check these to determine value. Most of the FDCs are common items, but there may also be some gems in that album.
