Awesome I got them both Wert. Thank you so much.

I'm a software developer myself. I need to build a complete tool suite for our hobby. It's just one of those things finding the time. I tend to use my free time with the family or doing my stamps. Maybe if someone else who does software engineering on here we could team up and build out a nice tool suite for everyone.
Anyones thoughts?

Joe...Your are like me..I am an avid believer in open source software...Free software...I might have a couple more programs that relate to stamp collecting.
Robert

Joe, I am going to make a post soon asking people what software is for stamp collectors, so watch this post and I will try all inputs from people and both of us can work on new computer type software for all the people on this forum..Does that sound ok with you..??

I had sent what you have just got to ""The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada"" trying to see if they could put a link on their site for stamp collectors, but have not heard from them..I guess they dont care..oh well.

Yeah Wert that would be awesome. I think if several of us collectors that are tech savvy or do it for a living pull together we could make a great open source tool for the community.

For sure when I get to 50 we need to exchange information and round up all the supporters we can.

Thats why Linus Torvalds has my highest respects for giving his tools away. As a side note: Does any one know if they ever made a stamp with him on it? I do believe his home country is Finland. Now thats a stamp I would collect.

Oh hey Wert. In using your gimp guid(btw its a great guide) you didn't mention if one could do a whole tray bed of stamps on the scanner and crop out the one they want to measure. Is this possible or will measurements be off? Maybe a dumb question, but I want to know before I treat these measurements as accurate.
Thanks,
Joe

Dont see why not...they should all still be 600 dpi...interesting...let us know if that works.
Joe...measure one first and include it into a whole tray of stamps...crop it and see if that known perf stamp remanes accurate...you make a good point...[

So on my hand gauge this measures 12 perf. I do it by itself or with a group it kinda measures between 12 and 11 1/2 perf closer to the 12. I'm thinking thats normal cause we can be even more precise with this software verses the naked eye. Id love to see what you measure.

Also, is this a copper(aka indian red)? I'm still going through this cool estate lot I bought. If only it was the 12 1/2 perf and that color. I could use such a rare stamp.

BTW everyone glad everyone told me to get the Unitrade guide. Now I have so many stamps I need to check for verities now that I know they exist. I might not have to buy any stamps for awhile.

Also, Look at the ballon drop in the lower left below the frame. Is that a re-entry or over inking?

Josephswager, your ballon drop is an LOM, or a Layout Marking. These were used by the engravers to place the stamps in the correct position in the plate. These dots and lines were supposed to be erased, but many managed to survive.
On modern stamps many LOM's or guide marks are found on the US Transportation Coils.

Wert- I got One lot on ebay it was a mixed unsorted lot and I believe it with some of the cool stuff coming out and the other was just a local buy off Craigs list on an estate sale. Its been pretty nice too. I'll start a new thread with some eye candy and I even found one stamp that in rough shape of Queen V that I have no idea what it is.

Peter- Oh cool so does that add any value or is it pretty common?

Josephswager, I can not tell you if it adds value to your stamp or if it is common - I do not know much about Canadian stamps. I suspect that your stamp can be plated though, just because of the guide dot. And I meant to tell you that it is a pretty stamp!

Thanks Peter. I just love the color compared to all the orange and reds this normally comes in. one thing for sure this set is tough on centering. None the less it is a beautiful stamp. Now I want to find out what plate number this is from. Any experts out there have an idea? I just ordered this bad boy since I ended up with about 200+ small queens in this latest purchase.
