At one time I considered some of the approaches Wert mentioned and all have draw backs. Even color charts are a challenge as they use different names for the colors. Add to that that every catalog uses different numbers and color descriptions which magnifies this problem exponentially. I just enjoy collecting each stamp as its major number and sorting them into shades. I gave up on worrying about specific colors long ago.

51studebaker - I should have said the chips don't change colour very quickly. I believe that they used a manufactured chip that was supposed to hold its colour as well as could be found at the time.

Keeping the books closed and out of the sun helps to maintain the original colours.

Also, keep in mind that these are only for the Small Queens and Admirals (using some of the common colour names for these stamps) - but even these names aren't completely standard between the major catalogues.

I am the same as you watermark.

After the main sorting by common shade differences, I rarely try to actually identify a stamp by a particular shade name.

The exception to this might be if there is a significant price difference between shades - I might give it a shot based on the resources and samples available to me.
