I think the bottom row contains examples of L-11 HS. They seem to measure right when I hold them up against the catalog picture.

I know it's a lot to ask based on a monitor picture, but I'd really like to dispose of any of these that are not precancels, so can anyone confirm the bottom row and/or also confirm that some or all of the stamps in the upper rows are non-precancels (box / post / fake / pseudo). I worry esp. about the 2c bicentennial in the bottom -- it fits, but it seems rather more refined than the other L-11 HS's I have.

I am not sure where these all came from -- luckily, it wasn't from a batch of supposed precancels -- they were probably just the odd one in a couple of different giant batches and then I collected them together three years or so ago. Anyway, thanks again.

I'm not convinced.

Several examples are shown with vertical lines which would lead one to believe they are "box cancels" and not precancels (for example the first two stamps in the 3rd row).

Further, the typical test for a precancel is that the city and state names have to fit within the size of the stamp itself, which is not true on the 3rd row, 4th stamp.

wt1,
Only 5 of them are precancels - The 5c bicent (maybe), the 3c Century of progress, the 3c defense, the 6c Garfield and the 2c Washington. To figure out which type numbers, you would need the measure the length of the Town in millimeters.

Oregonian -- are you saying the bottom row is also not L11-HS, or are you excluding them from your analysis?

Thanks.

Thanks wt1 -- that helps (vertical lines and not fitting on the stamp).

But I am also bringing this to the top again to see if Oregonian can clarify what he thought about the bottom row -- do you think that they are L-11 HS or that they aren't precancels, Mike? Also, when you said "2c Washington", I assume you meant the regular stamp, not the bicentennial?

And, does anyone else have any further ideas?

Yes, they are still sitting on my desk ...
