Curious minds want to know! What is it? I'm out on a limb here, but it look like a pre-cancelled stamp pasted over an postage permit...check here for Identification guide... need such things as perfs, image size, color, paper, watermarks, etc......http://www.vfthomas.com/USpostagest...twocents.htm

Thanks J and OldGuy,
I think it may be SC#499 it is from the same lot as the others I posted. It is on a larger envelope very thin paper looks like a legal document would have been in and possibly the 2 cent postage is extra charge for the weight of the documents. I have trouble with identifying the stamps my eyes are not what they use to be.

Agree with chasa. Offset. The choices are 526, 527, 528, 528a, 528b. To go a little further, I would rule out 526. There is no "DID' in the toga button. And I would rule out 528b. There doesn't appear to be a lot of dots on the top of the head.
That leaves 527, 528, and 528a. Unhappily, the cancellation marks obscure the identifiers as to whether it is a Type V, Va, or Type 6.

hideandseeker.

I hope you are going back to the 1847USA site to retrace the steps I outlined. That website, in conjunction with this one, provides much useful information in the identification of Washington-Franklin stamps.

A beautiful precancel, whatever it is - centred, firm, not over-inked. I like it.
