Hi everyone. First post.

I've attached a photo showing the backsides of five 3-pence imperforate beavers, all of which I believe are just different varieties of Canada #4. One of them was sold to me as a #1, but I did a number of tests for laid paper and I believe it's actually a #4c (ribbed, soft wove) because the lines are spaced too closely together. However, when I was preparing the photo, I noticed another one of the stamps also appears to have ribbing but, in that case, even finer and closer together than the one I was originally questioning. So now I'm no so sure.

I won't say which particular ones I'm questioning because I'd rather have you look at the photo (at 100% zoom), judge for yourself, and let me know what you think (partly to rule out that I'm not just seeing things). To identify the stamps, please just refer to their numerical position from the left. The only thing I'll say is that, in both cases, the lines I'm referring to run vertically in the photo (they would be horizontal if the stamps were in their usual landscape orientation). Anyway, please let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, the second to last one is ribbed paper. I do not see any signs of any of these being on laid paper

Thanks Coriandre. Yes, that's also what I thought and it's quite apparent even in the unzoomed photo. But if you zoom at 100%, do you not see the even finer, more closely spaced vertical ribbing on the stamp to the left of that one?

Tough to scan so they read well, but here are some examples where I tried to up the contrast so you can see the weave of the paper

First scan = 1, 1a, and 2 (all with certs confirming laid paper)

Second scan: 4c (soft ribbed paper) and 4ii (thick hard ribbed paper) with certs confirming the identifications.

Hope that helps.
C.

If you are talking about the third stamp, what you are seeing is the wove of the paper
