Holy crap that's confusing. What all this implies to me is that someone years and years ago looked at untold copies of these envelopes and measured each and every one they could find over the years to come up with so many varieties. Almost every image seen above look virtually the same to me. Impressive dedication.

Bingo ! Thank goodness we have members like Thomas that take the time to help people understand this very difficult portion of collecting US Covers.

What do you use to measure the heads?

My Scott perf gauge ruler. So yes, it's not anywhere close to exact so based on looking at the measurements which only do a full MM and not a fractional MM it was my best guess on the fractional part.

Full mm measuring just won't hack it in stationery. Too many things are measured down to the quarter mm.

If you have a little $$, then a Peak model 1975 scale loupe will give you measurements down to the .1mm. Here is a URL:

Reticle #1 and #2 work well for philatelists.

Or, if your budget would rather not bite off a $65 loupe, and if you have a scanner, get the free Photofiltre program:

Then select the Measurement tool from the plug-ins.

Here is a sample measurement using this free software:
