To pick up on PostMarkMaven's comment (and welcome to him/her), I might even go on to say that stamp collecting would be boring without the internet. Nothing to see; nothing to buy. Yes, the human contact through stamp fairs and in the old dealer-buyer relationships was nice but, if you are determined, you can still find these contacts.
Here's an example. I collect NZ. I was at the Royal in Halifax in May; there I spoke with a dealer from N.B. with whom I've had some dealings. He mentioned to me that there was another N.Z. collector in my City who was looking to sell some of his collection. Called him when I returned home to discover he lived two blocks from my house. I've visited him a couple of times and purchased some nice material from him. He has a great Chalon collection which I'm trying to find enough funds to buy.
John Lawson's stamp shop in Knightsbridge gone.......Ormond Stamps on Lambs Conduit Street gone......the Stamp Exchange gone.......I love the internet as well, but now I AM depressed......
