I came upon this ebay listing for a "scarce red" postmark on a postcard dated 1912 from what appears to be Clearview, NY. Although the listing establishes that it is a DPO (discontinued post office), a check of Jim Forte's Postal History website suggests that the post office was located in Cayuga County and was only in operation from 1895-1907. Obviously, the postmark is clearly dated 1912 (five years later):

Is this a legitimate postmark? If so, can we assume that Jim Forte's Postal History website is in error?

Nonetheless, I can find little else about a location in Cayuga County, NY by the name of "Clearview". Does anyone have any other information as to where this "lost" town was located?

The Helbock books show Clear View as operating in Cayuga County 1889-1916. Both it and the Forte listing are right, and both are wrong. To be more definitive about it - The Smith and Kay New York book shows Clear View from 1889-1895, Clearview from 1895-1907, and the Clear View again 1907-1916.

Clearview was a post office that actually operated in Cayuga County from 9/17/1889 to 10/31/1916, when it was discontinued with mail being serviced through King Ferry, NY. The reason that you couldn't find more information is that the name was either spelled as "Clearview" or "Clear View". The red cancel is a Doane cancel which was used from 1906 to 1914.

What does this mean? Are the listings right or are they wrong?

From what I gather by the previous responses, the post office used the one word name "Clearview" from 1895-1907. The two word "Clear View" was used from 1889-1895 and again from 1907-1916.

It is, however, curious that the 1912 postmark shown in the initial scan is clearly shown bearing the name "Clearview" (one word) during the period when the post office was apparently known as "Clear View" (two words). (I guess the small post office didn't want to pay for a new postmarking device just to add a space between the two word post office name.)

Thank you all for the information on this post office location.

As I look at a period map of Cayuga County, I suppose it wasn't really a town so much as just a section or neighborhood of King Ferry, NY which in itself appears to have been part of Genoa, NY, a larger community that apparently had multiple post offices in and around its vicinity.

Just to bring this thread to a satisfactory conclusion, I found a 1900 map of Cayuga County, NY with all of the post offices of that period listed -- and sure enough, Clearview, NY is one of them and is highlighted below. [Note its close proximity to King's Ferry (a/k/a King Ferry) and Genoa]:

What scarcity rating does Helbock put on this? There is one day left and no one has bid on it. If it is a 5 or higher this could be a bargain at $6.00.
