Hi guys...I had purchased a Prince Edward Island Scott #1 stamp off of ebay from a guy named zorplia (Michael).

When I received the stamp I found out it was a Scott #5i and not a Scott #1 as advertised...I contacted the seller and said the perforations on this stamp are 12 and NOT 9 like Scott #1 is.

He apologized, I just mailed his old stamp back and he promised to send me a NFLD Scott #72P on India paper free of charge.

I will wait and see if this person is as honest as he seems and report back...Always something..Does anyone else have a horror stories about an ebay purchase..?

Robert

Just from pictures, you usually can easily identify the difference between perf 9 and 12. Hope all turns well for you !

I have lots of ebay stories both good and bad. I do a great deal of my stamp purchases on ebay. Generally, I am able to get some great bargains and the searching for them is part of the fun, like hunting through a bunch of stamps in a dealer stock when I was a kid.

The worst part about ebay for collectors of mint stamps is the number of times that a seller describes a stamp as being MNH only to ship out a stamp that is actually hinged or has some other undisclosed gum problem. It always bugs me when I have to pay to ship back a stamp that is described incorrectly.

I had an interesting ebay experience last week when I spotted some early Canadian stamps for sale as shown in the image below. These were being sold as standard early issues with no minimum bid. Although there were several bidders, the high bid was still only about $20 with less than 30 minutes to go in the auction. What nobody seemed to have noticed is that the #15 Beaver stamp is actually a really beautiful copy of the major re-entry. When looking at the enlarged view in ebay, you can see how this stamp is doubled throughout with a spectacular shift visible on the left side of the stamp. This is one of Canada's best re-entries and is valued between $500 and $1,000 depending on how you interpret the condition. I tried to snipe this one with a $90 bid in the dying seconds only to find one other observant bidder who did the same thing and took it from me. I was sooooo disappointed!

ebay is an interesting topic for collectors today that I am sure has been discussed many times in this forum. I would be curious to know how other collectors of Canadian stamps have done on ebay.

I always hear rumours of ebay stamps being regummed and reperforated but I believe that all the stamps I have purchased have been legitimate. Other that the occasional NH stamp that is actually hinged (and gets returned) I have found ebay to be the single best source for adding to my collection. I should imagine that the faked stamp problem becomes much more significant once you start purchasing singles over $500.

Let's here some more ebay stories and opinions!

ahhhhhhhh...Scottamer...You should have placed a blind bid of at least $200.00...Wish I had seen that auction...Bugger, eh..??

BTW, I have heard from the seller about my NFLD Scott #72P, he said he mailed it 3 days ago and I also have mailed back his PEI Scott #5i to him...waiting..

I have bought stamps from ebay for years and got many many bargains. It IS the present day market place for stamps, under-selling most dealers. About 10,000 Canadian items are offered per day. I have corresponded with lots of dealers with follow-up requests. I can't remember ever being cheated (it's not really possible these days.)
Coin dealers, on the other hand.....
