I have lots of
ebay stories both good and bad. I do a great deal of my stamp purchases on
ebay. Generally, I am able to get some great bargains and the searching for them is part of the fun, like hunting through a bunch of stamps in a dealer stock when I was a kid.
The worst part about
ebay for collectors of mint stamps is the number of times that a seller describes a stamp as being MNH only to ship out a stamp that is actually hinged or has some other undisclosed gum problem. It always bugs me when I have to pay to ship back a stamp that is described incorrectly.
I had an interesting
ebay experience last week when I spotted some early Canadian stamps for sale as shown in the image below. These were being sold as standard early issues with no minimum bid. Although there were several bidders, the high bid was still only about $20 with less than 30 minutes to go in the auction. What nobody seemed to have noticed is that the #15 Beaver stamp is actually a really beautiful copy of the major re-entry. When looking at the enlarged view in
ebay, you can see how this stamp is doubled throughout with a spectacular shift visible on the left side of the stamp. This is one of Canada's best re-entries and is valued between $500 and $1,000 depending on how you interpret the condition. I tried to snipe this one with a $90 bid in the dying seconds only to find one other observant bidder who did the same thing and took it from me. I was sooooo disappointed!
