I live in the US and have had "community mailbox" delivery in more than one home without any difficulty. Although it would appear not all residents have the same experience, especially when a "community mailbox" is damaged and can only be replaced by the US Postal Service as in this situation in Florida:

Quote:
Three months ago, someone knocked down the mailbox that services nine residents in a neighborhood in Haile Plantation. Since then, the residents have had to go to the main facility on 34th street during business hours to get their mail.

An official with the Homeowners Association tells TV20 there's nothing they can do, he says it's up to the Postal Service to replace the box, which may take up to six months.

I still enjoy rural delivery today. Though they've moved my box down the road a ways, and grouped it with a few others. Safer for the delivery person, I suppose, but not to good for us walking along the country road at night (no sidewalks or streetlights) when the cars roll by. You keep an eye open for the lights coming over the hill.
I used to have a book written by George Wilcox about his campaign to bring rural delivery to Canada. He had experienced it while living briefly in the States (Michigan I think).
He campaigned the government almost single handedly to bring it about. A farmer back then could waste an entire day travelling into town and back just to get a couple of weeks worth of mail, and other supplies.
Thanks George.
