Hi all

I recently was fortunate enough to buy these items. One is a letter from a Canadian citizen requiring ordering procedures for the 1939 RV stamps on FDCs and another inquiring about Royal Train covers while they are in the US. So, I thought I would share them in here.

The newspaper clippings regarding the 1939 RV stamps were published the Telegram and the Toronto Daily Star.

Hope you these interesting?

Chimo

Bujutsu...Very nice information..But did they visit Newfoundland first before going to Ottawa, or Toronto..??
Newfoundland put out these stamps below in 1939, would there be a FDC for Newfoundland using these stamps, or was it a FDC from Canada proper..??

Wert: The Royal Party visited Nfld after visiting Canada. They left Halifax on June 15 and arrived on June 17 in Nfld for a few hours in Nfld before leaving for the UK. There were two special cancels that day (June 17): one at Holyrood where the Royal Party landed and the other at St. John's, the capital of the Dominion.

I have an extensive website created on this issue from the Canada, Newfoundland and the US: http://users.westelcom.com/gestus/r...39/RV39.html

I also have a website dealing with the FDCs of these issues: http://www.glennestus.com/royalvisit/rvintro.html

More on the Royal Visit:

There are a couple of very scarce cancels.

Originally, the Canadian postmarks were to be in Purple, the royal color, but the when the post office began using the cancels at 3:00 am on May 15, it was discovered that the purple ink was smudging and fouling up the handstamps and the machine cancels. All the covers, except Special Delivery covers, were destroyed and replacements with black cancels were sent to the addressees. The Special Delivery covers were not destroyed because of a regulation in the Canadian postal laws. It is thought that about 75 such covers exist. I'll try to find my copy and post it later.

The US post office cancelled covers on June 8, 9, 10, and 11. However, at midnight on June 11, the Royal Train was in Albany, NY on its way back to Canada. A few covers were postmarked in the US system on June 12 before the train passed into Canada at 4:00 AM. There is another rare variety in the US cancels. A few covers missed the June 8 deadline in the US and couldn't be marked on the train. They were postmarked at the philatelic agency (I think) in Washington. Unfortunately, the cancel dial had "USA" without periods instead of "U.S.A." with periods. Again, I'll try to find my examples and post them here. However, you can find all this information plus illustrations on my website.

Glen...wow..great sites, but as you said they visited Newfoundland on their way back to England, but (I hope you don't mind me using your map) the map does not show any stop overs touching Newfoundland soil..??..Or am I missing something..??

Hutin:

Actually, the stamps were supposed to be issued on May 15th, which they were. However, due to icebergs in the North Atlantic and fog, the Royal Party didn't arrive in Québec City until May 17. But the decision was made to keep the stamp first day on May 15. The Royal Train postal car was in Montréal that day.

Here's what I think is an amusing story related to the stamps: Many years ago I was at a stamp show in Montréal where I asked a very well dressed woman dealer if she had anything dealing with the Royal Visit. She replied she had a "diaper". I said that I didn't know how a diaper would fit into my philatelic collection. She looked at me and said "not a diaper" but a "die proof". I had misunderstood her Canadian Prairies accent. She didn't seem too pleased with me.

And here's the 4-6-4 "Royal" Hudson that took their majesties the 3224 miles from Quebec City to Vancouver.

It's centre stage at the Canadian Rail Museum (ExpoRail) near Montreal. (Just two tracks down from the tea service in Hayes' private business car.)

You really ought to come visit us!

thank you Glenn veri intersting but the small french card said the Minister of Post allows representatives to give the series to delegates before the scheduled date of May 17 ... it seems that the actual date of issuance was 17 , despite the fog and icebergs

A large book was prepared by the Canadian Post Office Department for presentation to some of the dignitaries involved with the Royal Visit. It contained photographs and covers cancelled with the Royal Train cancel. In addition, a small leather "pouch" was presented to various dignitaries. It contained a stock card with the three Royal Visit stamps and the current issue of King George VI stamps and pictorials.
