Finally the question has been answered by professional intervention. Look what I found at Christmas dinner in a "XMAS CRACKER"...

Thank god. I always say that 1898 XMAS stamp was the first Christmas stamp. Then all those highly-educated professional philatelists jump on me with both feet |

I claim that the 1898 was NOT the first Christmas stamp in an effort to convince myself that I don't have to collect the "map stamp" as part of my ever-growing collection of Canadian Christmas issues. At this point, I limit myself to 1964 to present. It's highly convenient for me to remain steadfastly ignorant of the evidence to the contrary!
And to all...another cup of egg nog!

Good one Wert, you're such a Canadian :) It's pretty funny, I'm sitting at my in-laws for the Holidays in Thunder Bay Ontario and guess what came out for Christmas dinner ? Yup, the Christmas crackers :) |

Key cahin with bottle-opener? You must have had a luxury box. A biro and a mini roll of Sellotape were the best finds in ours! |

"Christmas stamp" isa stamp issues for usage at Christmas - usually intended for cards. (But actually intended to boost stamp sales).
The map stamp was issued at / around Xmas - as a time of the year - and had nothing to do with Xmas mailings. |

Quote:Canada Post described the stamp issue as follows in its press release: It was a momentous time in postal history; one hundred years ago, imperial penny postage was introduced, allowing Canadians to send letters anywhere in the British Empire at the rate of one British penny - just two cents Canadian! It was a huge triumph for Canada, Postmaster General Sir William Mulock played a pivotal role in negotiating this change from the previous levy of five Canadian cents. The penny-postage stamp is one of the most revered by collectors. I t was the world's first Christmas issue. The stamp featured a collage of Queen Victoria's crown, a map of the world with the British Empire displayed in red, "Xmas 1898" and the phrase, "We hold a vaster empire than has been". Produced in three colours and by two different processes by the American Bank Note Company of Ottawa, it was the most expensive issue in Canadian philatelic history to that date. Recognizing the significance of the stamp for collectors, Canada Post will issue a single domestic-rate stamp. Queen Victoria's crown, a portrait of Postmaster General Sir William Mulock, and a reproduction of the original stamp are together depicted against a dark backdrop with "Canada" boldly displayed. http://postalhistorycorner.blogspot...mperial.html |

One of my crackers this year (multiple meals with various family sub-groups) yielded a standard-sized shoe horn!
