I've done considerable research, but haven't been able to identify the placename here. The cancel reads -----RING LAKE. The Geoscience Australia website yields no locality in Australia with a name that ends thus. But obviously it does exist, if there was a post office there! Can anyone help?

YEALERING LAKE (Western Australia). There's one on ebay at the moment that you can find by putting in the postcode name. Stephen |

Thanks very much. StevieG - I can only wonder why I couldn't find it with the Geoscience Australia search engine. |

I've got access to books on the postmarks of Vic and NSW. That yielded nothing. Before giving up, I thought I'd try ebay. And there it was. Cheers. |

Actually, I can't find it on ebay, StevieG. It seems that the name of the locality changed to just Yealering in 1926 but that the post office there kept using the YEALERING LAKE cds for a good many years afterwards. What puzzles me is that I couldn't even find the place searching for bodies of water. Surely, Yealering Lake itself is still there! Well, it turns out that it is, but it's called Lake Yealering and not Yealering Lake! |

I don't think I'm allowed to send an item number because I'm under 50 posts. However, on ebay type in "postmarks lake" and it should come up. It ends in about 4 hours. |

Premier Postal Auctions (Australia) has a reference tool which lists all known Post Offices in Australia. It has a search engine which I find useful.

Frank, I agree, it's a great resource. However, problems arise when you don't have the first few letters. In that case, all you can really do is use the Geoscience Australia search engine, which allows you to search for placenames using other letters. That works most of the time but not, as we've now seen, with places whose names changed a long time ago. |

Using the PPA is simple. In this case you would select the All States category. In the top box named "filter" type in Lake (do not remove the asterisk already there), and you will be presented with a list of places with lake at the end. Your cancel happens to be the last on page 2.

Wow, that is a really cool reference. I had a Western Australia stamp with "Day Dawn". I thought it was a partial town name, but turns out it was a real PO. |
