I like using ebay and am set up for PayPal. I am asking the question what auctions/buy it now or make offers there impress you for stamp investments. For the heck of it, the fun of it list some ripe for the picking items here. Could be fun to see if you can find some steals and deals. I am looking for greatest margin of bargain and value much more then what being sold for. Think market value vs catalog value. Good hunting and thanks in advance for any participation. Other then ebay feel free to list those too, where ever you find a steal or deal, everyone loves those. If you have questions on the rules, really there are no rules here just interested in seeing what people come up with. Yes I know the word investment may be a stretch but it's for fun and who knows you may help others find a bargain, more eyes on the target. Here is one- Don't laugh I am no expert... Sc.# 160 $25.00 http://www.ebay.com/itm/USA-Sc-160-...em566f2b19b9

Larry... our illustrious $325K seller (thinks) his "gash in forehead" is extraordinarily valuable... personally, I've never see the variety, and cannot pass judgement either way, but I'd strongly doubt there's much added value to it, which he, himself, admits... I'd reckon an offer of $100 would likely take it, (if) any buyer can extract even (that much) instrinsic value from it... (horrible centering aside)...

I don't know much about his stamps, as I mostly peruse his listings of covers, but "Dr. Jim" starts most of his auctions at $0.01 with free shipping. Of course anything of real value gets bid up along the way, but I probably buy 2-3 covers a day on average from his listings. Most are just in the $2-$5 dollar range, but are still a better deal than most of the BIN offerings for the same items. Occasionally he will start his auctions off at higher prices, or at a high BIN price. I do not know, but suspect, that these are consignment items. But you never know when he will have something unusual, like the elaborately adorned FFC I posted in the cover forum recently, or this, which I snapped up for a BIN price of $62 as soon as I saw it: |

blcjr - I am curious why this FDC is so valuable? To me, it's just an ordinary FDC with a booklet pane. Please enlighten me! |

orstampman, This is Scott #C72c on cover, considered by some to be the rarest modern FDC. It is even rarer to see one with a cachet. Supposedly, only three cachet makers produced covers of this booklet pane: Aristocrats, Artmaster, and Zaso. An article in First Days about House of Farnam says they produced a cover for C72c, but I've never seen one. It has a higher catalog value in Scott's US Specialized catalog ($125 for slogan 4, which is what you see above, $110 for slogan 5) of any air post FDC since C19 (1934), and by twice as much as the next highest CV's ($50 for C59a, C62a, C63a, C67a). C72c covers with cachets get snapped up pretty quickly whenever they show up. This is why I sort through certain seller listings in "newly listed" order on ebay. The early bird gets the best airmail covers. |

blcjr I found 3 of these FDCs (unfortunately without cachets) in a cover lot I purchased a while back. Can I trouble you for the catalog value without cachets? |

ebay has some great bargains, but if I were buying investment grade stamps, I would avoid ebay like the plague and find a solid, reputable dealer or auction house whom I trusted. |

NY Stamps a very mixed bag. Easy straight forward items no problem and I have occasionally purchased ok. Big collections can be iffy with faulty. Be careful. Stamps that require some thought into identifying be very wary. Please check out "stamp smarter" for reviews on NY Stamps misidentified to get a better idea. They sell a lot of stamps and move them through very quickly. |

Scott does not separately state a CV for covers without cachet. Personally, I would put their "CV" at $80-$90 and would expect them to bring about half that on ebay. But honestly I haven't seen any like that, so this is just an informed guess. Other than the few true cacheted covers, there seem to be a supply of covers with booklet covers "tied" via cancels in the place of cachets that bring almost as much as cacheted cover. I would not hesitate to take all three off your hands for $75. But that would be "a steal." |

All NYStamps listings all contains the follow statement, "Some stamps could be expertly restored, regum, or repaired."
Given what I can see, I believe this. Don |
