Quote: Amos Publications ~> Sad, pathetic company... My own experience has been quite good. I requested "permission" to use Scott numbers on my non commercial website, and they responded with alacrity and fairness. I was quite pleasantly surprised and pleased. |

Just td Wayback Machine for 1847USA and received the response "Wayback Machine doesn't have that page archived". Damn! I really liked that website. All similar stamps were organized together. It was really useful for IDing stamps. It'll be missed. |

Jvalek you should try again, it works for me. I can see the main page and every link I've tried so far. http://archive.org/web/web.phpSearch 1847usa.com then click on Feb 1. If a link is missing, try archives from past years by clicking on a year, then a date. |

I would also be very disappointed if the site 1847usa.com would be no longer available.
Even though I'm not really a collector of US stamps per se it was a good source for names of engravers which wasn't available elsewhere. |

The Wayback Machine is working for me. I might have to try a couple of times to get a page to come up, or right click to reload some images, but all the links I've tried are there.
Now, all we can do is wait. Hopefully there will be some favorable outcome to this.

If you see something you like on the internet, make sure you copy the record for yourself.
Don't expect the information will always be available to you in the future.

Hello out there. My name is Jenifer and my father, Bob, is/was the owner of 1847usa.com -- I see him every week but he's never mentioned that he wasn't working on the site anymore. I just remember him working every day on keeping it up to date and thinking "Boy is he nuts." ...because he wasn't ever getting paid for this and he's not exactly living the life of luxury.
He'd constantly talk our ears off about stamps, and sorry, we aren't philatelists, so we weren't ever very interested. I suppose that's why he didn't mention this to me.
I was about to show someone the site, but just now, found it gone. I found this thread and will be showing it to my father later and asking him about it to see what we can do to get it back up. If anyone out there knows how he can generate some income from it, that may help. He has been having a lot of medical problems, but I don't think that would keep him from this hobby. It probably was just the financial aspect of it.
Thanks for your support :) I didn't realize how useful his website was. |

Hi, Jennifer... thank you kindly for your posting... there are many of us here whom have been in wonderment over 1847.com ... we all, of course, regret hearing about Bob experiencing health problems... some of us had surmised this being a possibility (as well as) the possible financial aspects, and pray his health improves...
As this thread further develops, I can tell you early on that Bob need not worry about the financial end keeping the site up and running with regards to his webhost... there's many of us here, myself included, whom will gladly contribute to covering those costs...
Please keep us all posted...

Jenifer, Generating income from a philatelic web site is not easy but is possible. A primary consideration is the use of Scott number. If the site becomes commercial, Amos will not allow the 'free' use of their catalog numbers. A commercial site also will 'turn off' some users and some traffic will be lost but in my opinion this would be minimal with your dad's site.
Generating income can be done by selling ad space on the site (i.e. banners) , selling memberships and then limiting access to the content, or by simply accepting donations. If you setup a simple PayPal donation button (takes about 5 minutes) you will see an initial flurry of small donations and then a swift drop off. Long-term the site might be able to cover the hosting costs but don't expect it become a monthly revenue stream that covers the time invested.
Note that the above is based upon the site as it sits now (which is relatively static). If your dad, or someone else, is willing to continue new features, new content, then the addition traffic this draws represents more income potential. But make no mistake about it, developing a commercial web site which generates a substantial monthly income would require constant new content and features. Otherwise, the best expectation is that you might be able to simply cover a bit of the hosting costs. Don

Yes...let us not go for generating income, but just keep it going and available. There are too many good reasons for keeping it that way. It is too important to, perhaps millions (?), of those who collect US Stamps. And I was blaming Amos publishing. And I freely admit I now realize I was wrong. I just wish I felt sorry about it. -IBFS |

jvalek... It can be gotten to by using a link Kirk posted. It shows a calendar. Click on the circle over February 1st. All the pages I've tried come up, for now. If they don't, refresh the page. This should keep us going in the mean time, until we can collectively figure out how to help the site get back up and stay up. http://web.archive.org/web/*/1847usa.com-IBFS |

Thank you so much for your responses. He doesn't use forums at all so I don't think he realized himself that he had so much support. I'll be seeing him tomorrow and will show him all of this and see what he wants to do from there. Maybe he'll be able to hook up with one of you to figure some of that stuff out. I do remember years back that he had some trouble with Amos, but a lawyer had been in contact with him and helped him out of that rut.
Anyway, I'll post an update in the next couple of days. Thanks again! |

This was shared on the coin forum a while back and I saved it in my favorites for reference. http://thecollectingcommunity.com/Quote: The Collecting Community seeks to provide free online support for clubs and providers who want to bring their wealth of knowledge about and passion for the treasures they collect.
This might be an option worth looking into. |
