Hi guys...Take a look at the Scott first day cover and the centre oval...There is what appears to be a so called "naked savage" kneeling down baring gifts....But if you look at the NFLD Scott # 92p proof, it says "fisherman", but to me looks like a "sailor"..You would think in 1949 when the first day cover came out that they would at least try to keep the design some what the same..
And the goddess is taller than on the first day cover.

And the ship support wires go behind his hand on the proof, but are in front of his hand on the first day cover.

The Great Seal of Newfoundland received royal approval from King George IV on 1 September 1827. It depicts Mercury, the classical god of commerce and merchandise, presenting to Britannia a fisherman who, kneeling, offers her his catch. Below are the Latin words "Haec Tibi Dona Fero" - "These gifts I bring thee".

(I once dated a Dona Fero - took my Captain British-North-America shield but always wanted more! )
