Yes congratulations! (I agree about the horrible handwriting). But I have no access to the catalog mentioned in the cert - what makes the stamp special?
In the Gibbons Catalogue, it is listed as 253aw, which is Wmk crown to left of C of A, all normal ones are right to C of A.
Gibbons lists it a five thousand pounds, but that is for very exceptional copies.
This one is probably worth about $4000.00
The BW stands for Brunsden White who issue the Australian Specialist Catalogues. Brunsden use different terminology than Gibbons, and if you specialize in Australian stamps it is very important to have their catalogues.
Was the stamp in your collection for sometime before you realized you had something there?
Or did you buy it?
Yes the writing looks kind of shaky but maybe Mr. Watson is an elderly gentleman and sometimes age does that to one's penmanship. At least it is easy to read though.
I bought an old collection of world stamps in a childs album. The average cost of each stamp was two cents, so that is a real bargain. One of those "winning the lottery without a ticket" scenarios, Like most specialised collectors, I always check the watermarks on stamps, especially Australian as quite a few with error watermarks are very valuable. Regards Horamakhet.
