I assume that, due to the amount of land they needed, the only suitable location for the convention center was the west side a bit aways from other attractions other than the Intrepid. However, it sure makes it a bit inconvenient that there's not much else around as well as a dearth of hotels in proximity to the center. Maybe the amount/type of traffic attending events at the center, or the ease of getting cabs in Manhattan, doesn't justify the investment needed for an upper scale hotel attached to or nearby the center, as in some other cities. |

Not much around it? All of Manhattan is around it. There are a host of hotels nearby, within about 15 minutes or less. Plus lots of public transportation for those who don't wish to walk, which New Yorkers do in abundance anyway.

Come off it, revcollector. Not to start another row, but you know exactly what I mean. The Javits center is on the far west side of Manhattan, with relatively little around the center except train yards, bus parking lots, industrial sites, and undeveloped lots. I said that attractions were "a bit aways", not "on the other side of the island". The nearest subway line is on Eighth Avenue.
All I did was muse about two points - the reason for the location and the lack of an "upper scale" hotel nearby, as there are in cities such as Boston, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Columbus, Grand Rapids, to name a few, where there's a major hotel attached to their convention center or around the corner. Instead of acknowledging the obvious and contributing some relevant background, or alternatively, providing constructive advice to the out-of-towners who will understand exactly what I'm talking about when they show up for the show, we get "I must defend NYC at all costs" mode.
Enough already. See you at the show.

They have built a subway stop at the Javits Center which will be open in the next month or so. So no one has to go to 8th Avenue. And since this has been built over the last several years, perhaps it is you who need to brush up on what the area is like now instead of telling me what I should do. Plus the bus is on the corner. And I have been to enough shows to know all about hotels attached to convention centers. If people are so lazy that a walk of a few blocks really bothers them than that is their issue. There should be something for everyone on this list. http://www.booking.com/landmark/us/...-center.html |

Back on the subject of getting a space for meeting other posters ,maybe we should approach the show committee and see what they say . |

Perhaps we should consider becoming an online APS chapter? APS has previously allowed online chapters and doing things like this would probably become a bit easier. Of course we would need to formalize a few things, elect a few folks to run it, find a sponsor and submit an application to APS. Don

I'm willing to support a hospitality booth both financially and by helping to man it at some point during the convention. I've already volunteered to help man the "Society of Australasian Specialists/Oceania" booth so I"m looking forward to meeting many people in person.
Revcolletor is correct about transportation - I live in NJ and work in NYC but don't own a car since I live walking distance to the train station. Mass transit makes all of the city easy to access and getting anywhere in Manhattan is at most 30 minutes. With the extension of the 7 train to the Javits Center, Times Square will be a short subway ride. Not to get too political, but it makes you wish that other parts of the country would embrace mass transit as we do in the NY metro area.
The APS chapter is an interesting idea. I know the "Virtual Stamp Club" became an online chapter. I don't know the story about their message boards, but it appears to have split from the message board. |

As of today the new subway stop is open. There is also a lot of construction going on in the area, so who knows what will be there by next May. |

Just to humor revcollector, the following is a post from the Facebook page of World Stamp Show-NY 2016: "News Flash: Mayor deBlasio stepped onto the first subway train to depart from the new Javits Center subway station, which opened today! It is the first and ONLY air-conditioned subway station in NYC! The news stories and stations are calling it "the new Hudson Yards" with no reference to the Javits Center. When World Stamp Show-NY 2016 signed the contract for the Javits Center in 2007, there was not even a thought about the Hudson Yards. It didn't exist! As of today, the Hudson Yards subway station is finally open for the workers, commuters, visitors to the Javits Center, and residents of the brand new gentrified Hudson Yards neighborhood!" I would encourage all of you to check out the Facebook page for the show: https://www.facebook.com/ny2016?fref=nfAs far as a hospitality suite is concerned, I will be staying at the Waldorf which is probably a bit far to serve as a site for such a suite, even for fast-walking New Yorkers. However, I am willing to make a financial contribution if a convenient location can be identified. |

Just mentioned the show to revcollector on a different thread. Then Searched SCF and found this thread. It's March on Tuesday. Any updates on who may go. It was nice to see so many familiar names on this thread.

I'll be there. My schedule is not set yet. I'm planing on being there the entire week. That will allow me to do some volunteer work for the show. Then also make these events and meetings.

Hey IkeyPikey,
You started this, and I would love to do the same. $100.00 toward what ever you all choose. It could go towards what ever is the most reasonable. The suggestion of the "Best Western" very close by as a rest stop or scheduled meeting of all of us sounds good! Where ever you choose. A hotel room is fine, but I would be concerned about the consequences of signing for a room, with a group that has an open invitation! We can consider options as a group other than having a room up the road for a week. We should be open to any suggestions! I will donate to even the first bar tab! I have an open invite to just outside the city. West Orange NJ. from a dear friend. I may have to play a rounds of golf. That will be a pleasure. I am too old not to want to do this, and enjoy it. It would be a pleasure to send to anyone you choose my donation. I nominate stampcrow to hold the funds. He has spoken of who he is. I would feel very comfortable sending him a check! He is always out here. Let's trust someone soon! Let's go. "I Love New York"

Booth and meeting room space at Javits sold out in October 2015, so that is not an option. Enough pledges for a hotel room, or an organizer, have not come forward in 9 months and it is unclear how such a room would be staffed for the eight day duration of the show. So here is an alternative. On Monday May 30 at 5pm until ?, please join a no host happy hour at Clyde Frazier's, on 10th Ave between 37 and 38 St. It's a basketball themed sports bar. By New York standards, pricing is moderate (beer $7, cocktails $15). Bring cash unless you plan to run your own tab. If you reply here saying that you will attend, please do so, the place often fills up and we will be pulling aside a chair for you.
The date choice was for my convenience and that of my local club. It's Memorial Day, but some members of my club won't arrive until Sunday, there are society dinners every night in the rest of the week and I have to leave Friday for a wedding so the closing weekend is out. Feel free to nominate another night and gather then as you prefer ... Monday night is what works for me.

$7/$15 is not really "moderate". $6/$10 to $7/$12 is generally normal for many bars around town, but it is typical for a the sports bar of a legendary NY athlete. Bear in mind that the NBA conference finals may still be on that day or night, which will make it more difficult to actually communicate. |
