My grandfather was an educator and a diplomat of sorts. He was one of 50 US delegates to the 1946 convention in Paris which formed the United Nations. He helped South Korea rebuild their education system immediately after the Korean War. He may have been involved in the Japanese rebuilding after WW2.

Anyway, I recently came across this item again - I've been holding on to it for many years but never really investigated it before. It is an early Ryukyu Islands cover with printed postage bureau mark and hand-written "8c" tax (postage).

I've looked in a recent Scott Specialized catalog but I did not find anything like it. Any information about it is appreciated. Thanks.

The Michel catalog states that on the Ryukyu's from early 1946 until mid 1948 no stamps were used but a fee paid cancel. Which this cancel seems to be - taxe percue meaning fee paid.

Very nice item! Too bad no date! Unless the letter is still with the envelope.

Before the regular stamps were issued there were locals created by over printing the remaining Japanese stamps with a the Postmaster's chop. Once depleted the the handstamps were used.
