This is placed in my album as Scott # 114. I cannot find the grill on it. Used retro reveal to show back and all I can make out is the outline of an "R". There are many variety's of this stamp, am I just missing the grill?? This was purchased many years ago and probably just got added to album without any close inspection.

I've seen stamps of this issue appear to have no grill after being washed and pressed so many times that the grill has flattened out.

What you are seeing as an R is actually the impression of the numeral inverted and reversed.

I suspected that too, but I thought the retro reveal would have enhanced it enough to show up. I looked at it under a microscope as well and still cant identify reminants of a grill.

@Crow, Not any gum on this stamp.
@Rev, thanks, that makes perfect sense. Some of the other pictures did make it look like an R. I also loaded it upside down in scanner without realizing it. Made me think it was an impression of sorts.

The grill was probably right in the center below the numeral as this scan sits. There appear to be some signs there.

I reviewed all the images generated by the reveal site, and some do show a vague outline of a grill. Kinda tricky where it lies. I see a corner where you do, but in other pics, I see grid just to the left below numeral as scan is. Thanks all for the help. Special thanks to Revcollector, it was your website or one of your posts that led me to the reveal site. It helped me with some difficult revenue cancels as well.

I just noticed that and was going to post correction. Never the less, thank you for your input.
