This is a rather scarce cover sent by a soldier serving under General John J. Pershing in 1916 in the United States campaign to capture Pancho Villa and end the US-Mexico Border dispute.

The cover was sent to his mother. I was able to locate the letters themselves in the University of Michigan library. I'm going to contact them to try to obtain a copy of the letter which was in this specific cover.

Quote:
This collection is made up of letters that Private First Class Earl Seitzinger wrote to his mother while serving with the United States Army's 8th Infantry Regiment in El Paso, Texas, from July 1916-January 1917. He wrote about border tensions between the United States and Mexico, military activities at Camp Stewart, and leisure activities.

I was also able to locate a copy of Private Seitzinger's enrollment card:

Jenny,

I don't think that is his draft card. It looks more like the a service record what today would be called a DD Form 214.

Jenny, it looks more like a précis of his service, though I see no discharge date or classification. Looks like his enlistment was extended until 1919, though.

From what I understand, this unit was left behind on the Border to guard against any possible attacks on the U.S. itself while Pershing took other units into Mexico as the Punitive Expedition. Remaining behind to guard the border was an important duty of course, but they were not the ones chasing and fighting Villa in Mexico.
