Stamp has red Panama overprint and red line at top. There is a flag cancel underneath and postmark Colon. This is not an area I am familiar with. Can someone please give some info on this stamp and cover going to Hamburg Germany? Is the stamp of any value? Thanks for the help

I am gonna state tis is a FAKE cover.
Stamp appears (???, assume fake also) to be CANAL ZONE #3c.....BUT.... The cancel is incorrect. The CZ Post Office 1st opened June 24, 1904... This is cancelled April 5, 1904 |

agree! This is a Columbian stamp overprinted Panama when Panama became independent. Later on these were overprinted for a second time with "Canal Zone".

duncan, this is a nice cover. There's nothing unique about it that I can tell, but it is worth more than what one might expect. I'll see if I can find something similar that has been sold so that we'll know a fair price. EDIT: Here's one for sale: http://www.stampsandbooks.com/Panam...SB-00693.htm |

The stamp has no value but the cover may have, the stamp was issue in January or February 1904 ( depending if it.s a type II , III or IV ) and in June they was using the CZ black overprint, so for only few months those stamps was used, and with a cover a cancel to confirm the date, that make it a keeper. |

66, I don't think the Canal Zone necessarily has anything to do with this stamp. Wasn't it used in Panama until the country's new stamps were printed in 1905? |

I'm not sure KGB, I was just assuming Colon is in the CZ as it's the port entrance no ? |

I'll check.
EDIT:
From wikipedia: "The zone consisted of the canal and an area generally extending five miles (8.0 km) on each side of the centerline, excluding Panama City and Colón, which otherwise would have been partly within the limits of the Zone." |

duncan, this is the Panamanian flag, though it was only a proposed designed at the time. It wasn`t approved until years and years later. |

duncan, please check the link I provided above. This is a good piece. (Or are you just referring to the stamp alone?) |

Quote: Stamp appears (???, assume fake also) to be CANAL ZONE #3c..... Can't be a #3c ...a #3c is a pair of stamps not an individual one, a pair with 1 of them without overprint, without been pair with an overprint one, you have no way to know if it's not a Panama # 79 ... Overprint forgery exist on 3c pair. |
