Three cut envelopes, can anyone explain the difference between die 1, die 2, and die 3? The far right is definitely a green on blue, but heck if I know what die.
The top I don't know the paper (someone cut it too close) and the left is either white or buff. I took picture with a piece of white printer paper underneath them.

Thoughts? Die specialists?

Thanks,
Dave

There are a number of differences between die 1 (the U305 family [U306,...]) and die 2 (U311 etc.) and Scott chose the worst one to use in their catalog.

To the uninitiated, what counts as a "tooth"? Is it a green tooth or is it a white (paper color, actually) tooth?

I use the style of the ornaments as the quickest attribute to discern a die 1. Die 1 rays are all uniform and create a more circular arrangement than the typical (and there are many) die 2 arrangement.

Die 3 requires that you have a good strike. The key is essentially a double earlobe.

All of yours are die 2.

the first, the Queue projects below the bust..possibly a used U25. die 3, and second is U45, die 2... (just giving idea what "c" looks like for "g" in postages..although different stamp..)
With the 2 cent George Washington..(Best to get a Scotts cat..can see photos)..
the die 1 of Washington 2 cent (U70)..the bust points between3 and 4 notches of inner oval "G"of word postage has no bar.looks like the "c" in the photo above.
The die 2 .(U71).the bust points between2 and third notches of inner oval, the "G" of Postage"has a bar; ear is indicated by one heavy line, and one heavy line in corner of mouth
The die 3.(U73).the frame is the same as die 2, upper head more rounded; ear indicated by2 curves lines with two locks of hair in front; two vertical lines at corner of mouth.

Die 1 (U78)..the bust points to first notch of inner oval and is only slightly concave below.
Die 2 (U79)Bust points to middle of second notch of inner oval and is quite hollow below. Queue has ribbon around it.
Die 3(U80) same as die 2, but hair flowing. No ribbon on queue.

Size and position of the bust are different between Die 1 and Die 2, 3, 4. Die 1 never has a crossbar on the G. Die 2 usually has a crossbar on the G but not always.
