Hi!
I exclusively used Dennison hinges since I got back into the hobby, buying at least 30 packs over the years ( ebay).

As Fold O Hinges are considered almost as good - and cost half what Dennisons are going for, I picked up 5 packs of them.

The first pack yielded the light green Dennison colored hinges. They seem to be thinner than the Dennisons, but worked nicely.

However, the second pack I just opened yielded smaller whitish colored hinges - totally different than the other pack.

Note that all 5 packs came from the same seller, all are properly sealed, and all have identical package markings with a 1955 copyright.

Does anyone have any insight into this? Are the "white ones" worthy?

Thank you!

I think someone was playing around with packages of hinges before they sold them to you . Fold-O-Hinge has a easy to see green tint to them .As was talked about before, if you control the amount of moisture on the hinge it will make a difference ,no matter what brand you use.

I believe fold-o-hinge changed their forumula at some point. This is a known issue with fold-o-hinges. I've gotten a package of the white ones before and they're better than the standard modern hinges, but they're not as good as the green fold-o-hinges or Dennisons.

In today's mail I received 5 more packs of Fold O Hinges from one ebay seller. The packs were all copyright 1955. I opened each and all 5 contained light green thin hinges - the "real thing".

The two packs I have with the milk white colored hinges could be a "bait and switch" deal.

If Fold o Hinge did produce the white hinges, I sure would like to know.

There are versions of the Fold-O-Hinges that are better than others. A lot has to do with the original manufacture versus the "newer" ones that were made by those who bought out the Fold-O-Hinge brand and the substandard paper that was available to make the more modern (less desirable) hinges. This is a bit old now, but still a good read on the brands and manufacturing issues that brings us to the modern stamp hinges, none of which are produced in the US:

I do believe I like the green Fold O Hinges as much as the old Dennisons. In fact, I ordered 5 more packs from the same seller - his last 5 from what he says. When I was putting hinges in the older Scott pages I was very concerned about the hinges as I knew "someday" I would move the stamps to the "new and improved" scott productions. But now that I have new Parts 1-4, I guess it doesn't matter all that much if I use Dennisons or Fold Os or ???

BTW, I have one of eight albums transferred.... It will be an obviously long process to complete.

Good Lord Mobilmann44,

Just how many stamps do you have? By my count, you have (or will have) 15 packs of Fold O Hinges in addition to the 30 packs of Dennison's. That's a lot of stamps!

My best guess (I'm a retired financial analyst)is a good 50 k in the albums, and another 4k in dups or post 1959. That sounds like a lot, but others on the forum sure have more. Of course quantity is just a number. I'm more interested in "filling the pages" with the highest quality stamps I can get for the least amount of money. And frankly, I'm in the hobby for the shear relaxation and enjoyment it gives me, with the hopes that I can "play" with them the rest of my days.
