I am having an acute case of catalog blindness today.

The stamp is of the Barcelona town hall, perf 9.5 and no detectable watermark. It has a control number on the back and some reference to "Serie 10-L" in red. I cannot find it in Scott. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.

I don't have a Scott number, I'm afraid. The stamp is part of a series from 1943. The building, by the way, is not the town hall but houses the Museum of History.

Stamps like these were issued by the city and some of them can be of some value. Scott probably lists them separately, similar to how West Berlin is listed separate from Germany.

You won't find it in Scott. It is a local stamp issued by the Barcelona City Council, sort of like a local postal tax stamp. They are listed in the Edifil catalog. I don't have the Edifil catalog handy right now, so I can't provide any more details.

You have a Barcelona municipal stamp. That is why you couldn't find it in Scott. You'll need to look in either Edifil or Galvez.

It's from the 1945 series, and also comes in brown and in blue, as well as some minor varieties regarding the control number.

That explains why the stamp captioned Barcelona town hall would have an image of the Museum of History and that I can't find it in Scott.

Thanks everyone for the info!

Just to be clear, ayuntamiento means both town hall and municipal body. In English, it's something like when we complain about the White House.

As a curiosity: These tax stamps were allowed to help raising funds after the economically failed 1929 World Exposition in Barcelona. The investment of the Expo did not pay off as expected due to the worldwide economic havoc of the early 30's. A good thing for us stamp collectors

Thanks for the clarification, KGB!

Blaamand, I suppose I stepped into another philatelic specialist's black hole.

Dan, there are worse holes to step in. These are interesting in that for some years very few of these stamps were issued. Also, though I`ve never seen them, the stamps are known for being gummed with a brush and then hung up to dry. Apparently there is a whole study of drip marks!

That's what makes this hobby so interesting; there is always something new to learn!

I have my hands full with the different gum types in Soviet Occupied Germany. Looking for differences in drip marks?
