Can anyone help with identifying the "Squadra B" postmark on the back of this postcard carried by the Graf Zeppelin on the 1933 First South America Flight? This cover was sent from the Italian-held territory of Cyrenaica, which is located in modern day Libya.

Could it be an abbreviation for South Quadrant? A close up of the cancellation might help. |

The date places it as being marked after the card was mailed at Bengazi but before it arrived in Germany to be put on the Zeppelin. Can you please provide a very clear closeup, or at least tell us what the wording is around the top of the Squadra date cancel? My guess is that it is some kind of transit cancel, perhaps from a location in Cyrenaica or perhaps in Italy somewhere?
As was mentioned abover, Hermann E. Sieger was a stamp dealer from Germany and his company is still around today. Not only was he a stamp dealer, but he was the guy who in large part created collecting Zeppelin covers in that he created a huge percentage of covers on most every flight, and he is the author of one of the most definitive catalogs on Zeppelin covers. His cards and covers were always made very professionally and are often the nicest prepared ones you can find in many people's collections. This one is an example of how nicely done his creations were. |

To me the upper part of the text looks like "MILANO --???-- RACCOM." ie registered. Still doesn't make it any clearer what "S.QUADRA B" means but it should help. Any Italian postmark experts out there? |

I have just seen the same postmark on another Zeppelin cover.
The exact wording is "MILANO FERR. RACOMM."
FERR. is an abbreviation for ferroviaria, which means "train" in Italian. RACCOM. is an abbreviation for racommandata, which means "registered" in Italian. So, this card was carried by train (at some point) from Benghazi to Friedrichshafen via Milan as registered mail.
Still no idea, however, as to the "SQUADRA B" or "S. QUADRA B" portion of the postmark. |

"Sur, Quadra 8" I assume. Which I also assume was the destination, likely Rome or Napoli. |

Now that Smauggie mentions it, S. Quadra 8 or South Quadrant 8 seems most likely. I assume this was a postal district or office in the city of Milan that handled transiting mail. |

Jenny:
That flight confirmation stamp is actually a drawing of Graf Zeppelin himself! |

The transit postmark in question reads "Milano Ferr(ovia) - Raccom(andate) - 3.5.33 - 10 - Squadra B" which translates as "Milan Railways - Registered Mail - May 3, 1933, 10 a.m. - Team B". The postmark is identified in paragraph 9 of BOLLI ANNULLATORI E DATARI POSTALI = Postal Cancels and Date Stamps ( http://www.postaesocieta.it/magazzi...i_datari.htm ) as type Guller specifying the team (Squadra B) who handled the item. Compare the description of an item carrying similar cancels such as "Bologna Ferr. Raccom. (Squadra B)" and "Milano Ferrovia Sq(uadra) F" in http://www.ebay.it/itm/STORIA-POSTA...171366476626 |
