I spotted this on ebay and was wondering if anybody knows what kind of effect it has on the value of the stamp?

Apparently they were stamp and coin dealers in New York and Philadelphia in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Would the stamp be more desirable without this backstamp?

None as long as it does not show through on the face. Why a fairly common $2.50 revenue would need it is another story.

Perhaps the backstamp served more as an anti-shoplifting device? Cheers,

Revcollector: I can guess why the company would put that stamp on the back of a common revenue - they wanted people to know that it was a real stamp. Most beginning collectors have no experience with revenues, and most non-collectors have never heard of them. When I told a woman at work that I collected revenue stamps she asked: "Are those like the Christmas stamps?"

I suppose even 120 years ago a novice might need to know, although the anti-theft idea does seem more likely.
Revenues are like Christmas stamps, presents for the government. :-)

A marketing ploy? They were willing to put their name on it and stand behind it that it was genuine? I wonder how big stamp collecting even was in that period? Just think how many fewer stamps a collector would have had to deal with.

They also made reprints, This may have been to certify this stamp as real.

Stamp collecting was very big and about to get bigger still, to judge by all the philatelic publications there were in those days.
