Some thoughts, maybe I'm not 100% accurate ..., on this letter from 1844.

It was sent from San Sebastian (Spain, very close to the border of France).

The other red postmark on the front was put at Saint Jean de Luz in France, it was the exchange post office with Spain.

1 / ESPAG. / 1 (ESPAG. = Espagne)
6 JUIN 44
ST JEAN DE LUZ

On the back the black postmark is of Bordeaux.

The letter arrived by ship to UK but the postage rate was not calculated as a ship letter (8d, 1/4, etc).

It was charged as:
- 5d, 1 British rate
- 10d, 2 Foreign rates (for a weight under half an ounce)

so a total of 1/3.

p.s.
It's very common to find letters from the Huth archive that are not "single" letters.

Looks like surname Wilkins done at Bloomsbury square

The 1pyPPaid seems to start with Cha in the top line. From your list could it be

Chancery Lane but looks like a CP after it?
1pyPPaid

I am smelling polynymous Andrea.

BTW, I was bit frustrated for not getting any thanks from duncanvr in another thread https://goscf.com/t/49907 but after reading the first post of duncanvr in this thread, I now get to know his attitude.

The postage rate for this letter:
( 1876 QV LONDON COVER WITH 4 x 1d RED STAMPS & ˝d BANTAM TO FRANKFURT GERMANY )

was 5d (double rate, ˝oz - 1oz), so unfortunately a ˝d postage stamp is missing.

About this letter:
( 1839 HMS HASTINGS SPITHEAD 74 GUN SHIP LETTER CARRIED BY 1ST LIEUTENANT RARE ! )

The letter was posted at the receiving house of Princes st.
It was charged for 2d, because it was sent within the town area of London.
It was redirected within the Town Area of London so the total charge was 4d.

The two red postmarks show the timecodes of 2pm and 6pm.

IF I remember correctly the meaning of the times I try to explain what happened, by this table of 1839:

So posted at Princes st before 12 Noon.
It arrived at the principal office and charged for 2d.
It was then sent out for delivery at 2pm.

It was then redirected to a new place so it went back to the principal office.
2d charge canceled and charged for 4d.
And from there it was sent out for delivery at 6pm.

Thanks very much aryeh for the good info & research, its to bad the ˝d BANTAM stamp is missing on the QV cover to Germany. The HMS HASTINGS one is a great pre-stamp and its nice to see how it was written on a ship in port and then carried across town in London. I was researching my item 1828 ST LOUIS TRANSATLANTIC LETTER BY GENERAL J RAMSAY TO LORD RAMSAY IN ITALY it seems to be from St Louis but I wasn't sure if USA as both men in the letter named Ramsay were in Canada in 1828, the letter was posted privately to so no markings from origin.
