You're just waking up, but I'm rubbing my eyes. That looks like an N to me, not an M. But that's ok, because Nerut is still in India. State of Behar, District of Nalanda.
No British Indian post office ever existed at Nerut, let alone be in 1814.
The first Nerut Branch Post Office (PIN 803107) was opened after 1970, which now functions under Asthawan Sub PO and Biharsharif Head PO in Nalanda Division of Patna Region of Bihar Circle of India Post.
ha ha ha! I don't know if I 'owe' you thanks, but I will certainly concede to your superior knowledge of Indian postal history. I only call 'em as I see 'em, and to me the cancel looked like it read Nerut.
At any rate, I'm alway happy to be proven wrong if it benefits the 'greater good'
I have already explained the appearance of N in the Merath Giles 3 mark which was due to the superimposition of the vertical stroke of 4 of 814 of the London mark over the left diagonal stroke of M.
So sorry Joy. I had no idea you were referring to another thread from four months ago, I didn't click the link. Soooooo, yes. Thanks very much for the information on the letter card. I had put those pieces away when my research came to a standstill, and had not returned to the thread. Please don't think me ungrateful, just preoccupied.
