Last night I was surprised when I was notified the postcard shown below was not allowed on ebay because of it's subject.

And that is ridiculous! I do not fly the flag and never will, but that postcard is history and should be allowed.

Was there anything in the title or description that they caught? Or was it strictly based on the image? Don |

The title was;
Early Postcards Confederate Flags & General Joseph Wheeler Union & Confed. Army
There were 2 postcards but the message said Confederate Flags related material is no longer allowed.

I think ebay only uses text parsers to filter out this kind of thing. try relisting without any mention of 'Confederate' and it should be fine. Don |

Considering they have an entire section in the US area devoted to Confederate stamps, as well as tons of books relating to the Confederate flag, it does seem kind of odd. In fact, you can even buy a 3'x5' Confederate flag on ebay! 3 sold in the last 24 hours. Very strange. |

I do not think that ebay does this because they want to be politically correct, the do it to avoid costly ligation. As such, they simply have to demonstrate that they do 'due diligence' and they have legal standing. Putting algorithms in place that look for words like 'Cuba' or 'Confederate flag' is all they need from a legal perspective. Don |

They are not actually ' ebay rules', they are following US laws and avoiding costly legal entanglements. It is actually in ebay's (and their shareholders) interest to list everything and anything they can. Don |

This is not the result of US law or litigation. ebay announced the decision on 23 June 2015: Quote:"We have decided to prohibit Confederate flags, and many items containing this image, because we believe it has become a contemporary symbol of divisiveness and racism," ebay spokesperson Johnna Hoff said in an email to CNN. "This decision is consistent with our long-standing policy that prohibits items that promote or glorify hatred, violence and racial intolerance." CNN.com, June 24, 2015. Amazon, Walmart and Sears did the same, in approximately the same time frame after the Charleson church shootings. Depending on your view, this is a political decision, or a customer relations decision, but it's certainly not mandated by any federal law. Chris |

Chris, What you state is true enough....but I was responding to The Pope who was saying that ebay restricted listings with 'Cuba' and 'Iran'. And while the 'Confederate flag' issue might be described as being a marketing agenda, my opinion is that it is based upon litigation avoidance. Don |

Do a search on ebay for 'confederate flag'. You don't get an empty list. Why are some items permitted and others not? Isn't that a little hypocritical? |

I'm sure I can change the title to slip it by but I probably won't bother, I'll just throw it in a box. However I really disagree with their attempt to deny history. It makes it too easy for people to make the same mistakes. As for Cuba I've combined Cube with Dominican Rep and sold them as Caribbean with good success. ebay actually allows Iran as long as you don't ship it outside the US. Go figure! |

Don,
I see that now, thanks for the clarification. You are correct. US sanctions against Iran in place for years did not change much in January as a result of the nuclear "deal," and still prohibit almost all trade in goods by US entities with anyone Iran. Interestingly, though, in some cases a US entity can set up a wholly owned foreign entity and that entity can trade with Iran.
