The two 'eights' look very different than one another, do they not?

My guess is that the bottom of the nine looked like the bottom of the three - eg, largely missing - and someone helped things along.

I prefer stupid to nefarious, but that's me.

Cheers,

Hi,

Stamps were not around in 1838. By deduction this is an 1898 cancel.

The 3rd number is "8" badly inked so the year date is 1888. Notice how rounded the lower left of the number is. A 9 doesn't have that much roundness.

It's a 1884 stamp and they they release another design on 1893 , so 1888 is more on the target than 1898
