Somebody got a package in the mail!

Spectacular page Rod - awesome!

The 109 is a gem. Bright color & as perfect centering as I've seen on that stamp. Normal perfs for that issue - if you compare to others in the set, you'll see that the right side perfs are common for that series.

The Red Crescent stamp is also very nice. As expected. Again really well centered & nice, fresh colors.

The 1924 series is one of my favorites. Not sure which stamp is new to your collection, but guessing the high values? All really nice - esp the 100k & 200k values. Centering is tough for that series - both are great copies. (Common to see centering as your 50k value) You made a great page for them - my only issue is your title! That was the first commemorative series of the Turkish republic - issued Jan 1, 1924 - and was to commemorate the Lausanne Peace Treaty which established the country of Turkey. Only 25,000 full sets issued.

NIce finds & fast shipping for a change!

Nice words there Michael. Thank you.
Yes, fast shipping indeed, I was hoping it would be them, when I had a postal card in the mailbox.

Could hardly wait to appraise Sc#109. My dealer came through once again.

I feel more settled with Turkey now, I have a good foundation on which to build. (just missing the ISFILA catalogue)

Mine too, I wonder why that is? It has been a favourite since I began, I never thought I'd crack the whole set.
I read wiki on the Battle around the Sakarya Bridge, the vignette shows the
damage by the retreating Greek army.

I also received Dr. Birken's catalogues in the same mail, losts of juicy information, All in German.
I can get by with basic Romanian, now German. Sheesh.

He treats all the Turkish curly ones, the IMPRIMES, overprints, Thessaly,
so Google translate is going to be busy.

Here is an example of the 1892 Arms and Tughra of El Gazi set

Looks like some really interesting studies - I've never seen those cats/books (?) before. I'll be very curious to see what they say - as soon as you can get it translated?! Seems from the picture that some serious flyspecking going on...

Hi Rod and Michael,

I'd not heard of Andreas Birken and his books before and they look very interesting indeed.

Here's a list from his own web site with pictures of them:

http://www.arosturk.org/buecher.htm

and a short Wikipedia article about him in German:

Hi Nigel.
He is one of those gentlemen, that defies understanding, how he can achieve so much in one lifetime.

After agonising over some of the rarer stamps of the Turkey Catalogue, and the realisation vast amounts are forged, at least now we can arm ourselves with some evidence to point us in the right direction.

The "IMPRIME" overprints are a classic example, hordes of forgeries exist on ebay, at huge prices, until now I have just ignored them outright.

From what I can see with just a cursory look, is that all Opts are addressed.
It is going to take some time to get used to the journals.

Google Translation....

Michael.
Not sure if I advised you, regarding Sc# B24

Dr. Birken replied...

Sc#B24 is MICHEL A367. I have not seen it and have no copy.
The Isfila catalogues does not list that stamp.

Hi Rod,

If I'm reading the catalogues correctly:

Sc #B24 = Mi A 367 = SG 638.

SG also lists a perf variety: SG 638a perf 12 x 13˝ comp.

Nigel.
Caveat, I am using Stanley Gibbons 1965.

So, Sc#B24 has to be a Type A19 (no gap under text) 20 para Carmine Opt in Black. CV $300

My Gibbons does not list it.
From my interpretation, it has to be SG Type 25 (designed by Nazim Bey)
with an overprint of SG type 58

I have noted Turkey Philatelists advertising to buy a copy, Dr. Birken has not seen it.
As Michael points out, we have yet to see an example.

Is it the stamp, that never was ?

PS: ebay sellers offering Sc#B24 usually show the Opt on Sc Type A21

Hi Rod,

In the 2006 SG Central Asia catalogue:

SG 638 is still SG Type 25 but the overprint is Type 55.

SG Type 58 is a straight-line surcharge.

SG 638 is also listed (and unpriced) in the 2008 SG Stamps of the World where a simplified listing is given that combines the five- and six-pointed star versions of the overprint (Types 54 and 55).

SG 609-629 have Type 54 and SG 630-659 have Type 55.

Guys were talking 3 different languages here. I'm completely unfamiliar w/SG - no idea what the types are etc...

Rod - you did tell me what the Dr had said - which only confirms/strengthens what I already believed - that Scott #B24 does not exist.

Scott has it in italics - which means Scott editors were dubious. Isfila doesn't list it at all.

But in the back of Isfila, there's a Michel conversion - and they list Michel 367 as Isfila 593 - which is not the stamp (Scott B24) in question. So not sure what your listing is Nigel - I'm guessing Mi A 367 is different than Mi 367??

I'd be very curious if either of you could post a picture (or even the listing?) from SG or Michel??

Hi Michael,

Yes, I'll try to post extracts shortly although it's not easy to scan my Michel catalogue.

Mi A 367 has an unusual number format for Michel. It's a main number listing following Mi 367 and I assume it's been added at some time in the past to avoid renumbering later stamps.

By the way there is also an Mi A 369.

Scott uses italics for prices for "items that are difficult to value accurately".
