Thank you for any help getting me started. First question: Why does the seal on the back cover part of the postmark?   |

Hypothesis: Posted in the Ottoman Empire during wartime; backstamped in Istanbul; given to a censor; opened for censoring; resealed by the censor with the red seal; sent onward to New York and Philadelphia; then opened by the recipient who broke the red seal.

cj, this seems like a very plausible theory. I've got a Russian outgoing cover where the red wax seal of the censor covers the postmark. I'm miles away from my collection so I'm afraid I can't post an image.

What a beautiful Cover! envious. I would very much like to see the seal as a censor item, proven. It may be, a device used ubiquitously around the world, as a company seal ? The fancy edge to the seal, prompts my question. YWCA = Young Women's Christian Association  |

The color of the seal matches the embossed postage on the front of the cover. Perhaps the seal was purchased with the envelope. Also, the flap of the envelope doesn't appear to have been used. It's tucked inside and the letter appears to have been sealed without using the flap. Maybe the postmark isn't under the seal but the ink didn't adhere to the seal. |

That was my only reservation,
If the Pmk is under the seal, then a strong possibility a censor seal.
We need an member fluent in the language, to assist us.

We can thank Blaamand, for the searchable database, offered a few days ago.
Richtim PO would be a specialised native knowledge locale,
I couldn't find it, Galata is densely populated.
I was assuming it would have been near to the YWCA office at that time.
