Imagining that there are "extra" letters there because of the double strike, can you make ILULISSAT fit? I can convince myself yes, or no, depending on how many times I look at it.

Interesting! Does anyone know how many post offices there are in Greenland?

I like PostmasterGS' answer better than mine.

Hope this is legible after the image optimiser has done it's work. I picked this up in Greenland in 1987, and I suspect it hasn't changed much since then.

Nice map Tim H.! I didn't see Qutdligssat indicated, so I googled it. According to Mapcarta, it is on the northeast side of the largest island off the west coast...the one that is at about 70.5 degrees latitude.

Also, Qutdligssat is apparently no longer the name. Now it is Qullissat.

And according to Wikipedia, Qutdligssat/Qullissat was abandoned in 1972.

Thanks everyone for all the useful information. It is greatly appreciated.

Originally I too thought that it was ILULISSAT but after seeing PostmasterGS's image of QUTDLIGSSAT I have changed my mind.

Another question concerning Greenland postmarks. In the example the place is CLAUSHAVN but what does the PR. JACOBSHAVN refer to?

I believe "PR." means "via."

I suspect there is also some sort of postal office or service at the USA's Thule Air Force Base in far northwest Greenland. Don't know if there are local civilians who work there.

PostmasterGS,

I count 41 post offices. Who would have guessed there were any?

Climber Steve,

I have an uncle who was assigned to Thule in the 50's. I suspect yhey had (have) an APO code.

Thule still has a APO. It's APO AE 09704.

Some cities have variable spellings on certain cancels - like Godthaab and Godthab (before it was Nuuk).
This site gives about 1/3 of the postmark information, If you want more information the Facit catalogue has good data, and if you seek more detail look for the AFA book on the subject.
Post anything if you have questions .
FYI - that hard-to read postmark it's Outdligssat. That place has been using the name of Qullissat since about '73.
http://www.greenlandstamps.dk/Catalogue_page1.htm is a good place to start.
