Hi guys..Was looking through the junk box of stamps I bought and came across this pair of Scott 114..The stamp on the left is RED-BROWN as Unitrade identified, but the stamp on the left is what I consider VIOLET-BROWN...

I took a ink sample from both stamps many times and from the exact same spot on both stamps and it came out the same as the picture below shows.

Also they are filed with lots of dots..And they do not seem over inked

Hi Robert,
What is the blue discoloration on the right stamp paper (purple cancel ink? dye from an envelope when soaked?)? And would this blue not also be present on the brown ink causing it to look like a different shade? Something is blue is clearly impacting the right stamp only. You can see it in his face too. But compare just the lower right "7" browns, they look identical to my eye.
Don

That stamp has been in colored water looks like. Also, it looks like a line pair, but is very hard to tell. If it is a line pair, it is very possible for the color to be different ( stronger ). It happens a lot on the strips I collect - at the start of the plate there is more ink available than later on?

I was concerned about that dye Don, So I picked spots not near any blue, purple or such...Does seem very strange, maybe really nothing to worry about preceding with.

Peter, if it is the start of a run, ALL plates would have to be inked the same, in my opinion.

Well..To get violet you mix RED and BLUE..The red from the stamp must be coming from the RED-BROWN colour and the BLUE from the soaked paper..Mystery solved..Thanks guys.

I am glad you're easily satisfied Wert, but you did not answer my question. Is it a line pair?

A line pair is a pair of coil stamps which has an inked line between the two stamps at their perforated edge. This line only occurs every so often on a roll of coil stamps.

Yes Peter..You are correct..Not extremely rare, but very collectable...BUT not coil stamps..so medium rare..haha
