Quote: Funny... I thought njs900 could be "Deep cert" Nope. I was thinking last night - we've talked a lot about the overall health of the hobby. Just in looking at the number of 1c platers out there, things are looking pretty good to me from that myopic point of view. |

Njs - that N curl on 11R and 31R sure looks like the usual foreign matter on the transfer roll deal. Good catch.
I found two 71R3's at Siegel. The one on-cover its hard to tell if the curl is there or not. I didn't see it on the off-cover one.
I didn't find a 51R3 with a quick search. |

I am working on a reconstruction of plate 2 of the one cent and will pay a premium in cash or stamps for 13R2. |

61-62-63R3 centerline pair plus reattached single from the area of the plate of my previous posts. Although a pen cancel reduces the Scott value of a stamp, I find a neat pen cancel better for plating purposes than a CDS. I will be happy to send a 1200 DPI scan of any of my posts, but my response time may not be prompt as I have little time for my stamps as of now. Still working. |

njs - I remember that strip, from when we got a cross- centerline tie with the dot, I think to the right of 70L from the strip at the start of this. That helped validate the plating of both items.
Thanks for posting that. |

I considered bidding on that stamp for the same reason as you. I could not place it on Plate 3. The interesting thing about the cracks that are shown on the Neinken mats is that all of the cracks are oriented in a direction 90 degrees different. I couldn't find a single example of one where the cracks go in a NE-SW direction. |

I deleted the above stamp in question, because I was able to Plate it & it's not from Plate 3... sorry for any confusion. |

As advertised.
There is definitely something to be said for getting Plate 3 stamps certified - via Doporto in particular.
Very often, when people sell their collection, or pass away, specialized identification of stamps gets lost. They have to be discovered again. I ran into that a lot when I was accumulating a lot of plate 3 stamps. I'd see one unidentified in a sale, that I knew was plate 3, because I had seen it in a sale years back, or in an exhibit, where it was properly identified. Since plate 3 stamps are hard enough to get right -- and mostly require someone with >100 plate 3 stamps in their possession to really do a good job with, I think getting certs on many of them is a good idea. In addition to obviously giving you some pleasure, I think it will help down the road. |

Dudley, I got the stamp in and took a close look at that stray dot. IMO it is postmark, not stamp ink. It appears too black and no blue. Here is a close look for you to see. |

Is there any special ID marks to look for on a stamp to tell it came from plate 3 or 4? |

Plate 4 used a different relief roll from plates 1-3, so you can ID a Plate 4 stamp this way (see Neinken's book). |
