Type IV Scott #279b ,No Watermark ,how do we determine the color,any ideas?

For starters, the stamp has a watermark visible in the back view. The stamp looks like a deep red 279B but could be a 279Bc rose carmine if it had a little more of a bluish cast. A note was recently added to the Scott Specialized before 279Bc, the scarce rose carmine shade, indicating that the pinkish rose carmine shade will fluoresce under UV light. The real problem child is the alleged 279Bi brownish carmine shade. I haven't talked to any experts who would be comfortable expertizing the brownish carmine shade, not to mention having an example as a color reference.

A reference book with fairly accurate rendering of some 279B shades exists, but there is no substitute for having a set of shade references for this stamp.

Looks like part of an inverted you in the lower right quadrant.

I keep witting the letter but getting the word, you. Very annoying.

I've made numerous tests and close ups of the reverse,and conducted the watermark test numerous times,and still no watermark.

i've added an additional scan in a much lighter setting!

There is a watermark in the upper right perforation. This stamp could be 267. Type III.

There is an argument for 267 Type III, if it is 267 Type III then your stamp is carmine.

As others have indicated, there does appear to be a watermark. There is part of an upside-down U at the lower right (as seen from the back of the stamp).

I have such a difficulty sorting the two. They both look the same to me.

edw_kim's stamp is a type IV, not a type III. Blow up the image and you can see all the characteristics of a type IV. Looking at it as is, the recut line in Washington's hair is very clear. That's a type IV characteristic. This is #279B, correctly identified.

Color: You'll probably run across enough of these to build up a reference collection. Just don't include badly stained or obviously faded copies, of course. Mint copies are always preferable for color comparison. And there are intermediate shades that Scott does not list. Nonetheless, this is clearly carmine to me (and not rose carmine, unfortunately). So this is #279Bf (not written as #279f).

Red for these is a bright, sometimes pale fire engine red, if that helps. Orange red is a pale color where vermilion is a strong color. Pink is a bright to pale version of the expected color.

Do quotation marks help? As in "U"
