Hi Rod! Great thread am enjoying it! What listing or catalog do you use for the postmarks? I've looked at http://philatelicweb.com/pmks/ and tried looking up a few easy ones (at least I assume they are easy) with little success. Its possible that I'm not using the site correctly ... here's one that I put in with no success.

Ha! Well discovering new postmarks appears to be relatively easy - who knew?? I'll send this (and several others that I've unsuccessfully looked for) on to the database compiler.

Thanks Rod for yet another aspect of philately to look out for and collect!

Clif, postmark collecting, is a lot of fun.
How one keeps them, collects them, displays them, mounts them, is a real headache.
Mine are a jumble, B.o.b (Back of book)

The webmasters whom create these lists, are to be honoured, as Alan Oliver, the man behind that database. An amazing achievement.

I think (for now at least) I will simply scan into an informative PowerPoint ... and yes, that database is quite an achievement and should be recognized!

Geoff, I think not. That was my initial thought, but weight of evidence does not support it.
Then I thought perhaps a time code, but no. Remains a mystery.

See evidence on a red square A-9
Then the same squares with three lines in all corners A-Z
(Scans : Mr. Oliver's Pmk Database)
(I still have yet to check a catalogue of Brit Pmks recently downloaded)

Hi Rod and Geoff,

Here's a quote from London Fancy Geometric Postmarks by Maurice Barette:

(in a discussion on this LONDON, E.C. mark on page 86)

"The Type VI used a time-code with figures from 1 to 7, plus 11 and 12 -; several strikes have been recorded with late collection codes : X, Z or ZZ."
