I've got this promissory note from 1871 that has two R37C's on it. I was looking at it today and noticed just how different the two stamps look. So I thought I'd post it and see what you guys thought? Scanned at 600dpi so it's not super detailed. To me (besides) the difference is in the color of the two stamps. I look forward to your comments.

The stamps are 146 years old, who knows what that document has been through based on it's appearance. Also the document was folded for a very long time, you can see the shadow image. They probably started out life as a pair, and have lived very hard since then.

I agree. To me, one of them simply looks dirtier.

I could also suggest that you compare the margins on the left and right of each stamp. I would be willing to bet they were from the same column of the same sheet.

Thanks everybody. Wasn't trying to suggest two varieties, I was intrigued by how much sharper one stamp looks compared to the other.
I guess 146 years will do that to a stamp.
BTW, the document had been torn in half and repaired at some point, that's then it crease you see in the middle. That happened way before my time though.

and I have to say the scan doesn't do the clean stamp justice. I sure think it's pretty.

The shade might be pretty, but both stamps are damaged.

And that's great, since I'm keeping it.

Try to see the forest, stop looking at the trees.

I've spent the last 47 years looking at the forest this is a part of, and I name each tree as I see fit.
