Just received this in a shipment with about 30 stamps I picked up for their canx dates for my calendar collection. Didn't actually need the date but spotted what looked like a plate scratch or crack on this copy and decided to risk it. For those that like these kinds of things, enjoy! Safe to assume it is already known?

I found one similar to that recently as well. You can see it in this recent post: https://goscf.com/t/54191It is interesting that both have a 1867 date. Now whether it is a scratch or crack, I have no idea. What Scott calls a scratch on one stamp, they call a crack in another. Very confusing. |

RevHound,
Thanks for the reply. I remember your post :-), but didn't remember the scratch/crack.
Can you post a scan of your copy? Difficult to see but it sure looks like they are perhaps the same position?!?!?
Thanks in advance!

RevHound's shows a double transfer. Looks like a different shade, but that could easily be the scanner difference. Eight months earlier than your copy. |

I agree, but man does that scratch/crack look like it is the same!
The line at bottom right (above the "2") appears to be slightly longer but it looks close based on where it is in relation to George's left eye and the junction of his collar and hair. |

It may be the same position, but the lighter color may not show the DT. The line on your stamp would have possibly shown where it's now perforated. How many scratches like can there be on this plate? Now if it was a fiber on the transfer roll, wouldn't that leave a couple of impressions? http://chronicle.uspcs.org/pdf/Chro...12/12824.pdf |

Hopefully these show up as higher res close-ups: Eye to shoulder: Shoulder to "2" Now that I am looking at the second pic, it does appear to better match the length of RevHound's copy. It originally looked shorter at the "2" end. |

StateRevs, it is a scratch. A crack is almost always ragged and very seldom if ever runs in a perfect straight line.

1200 dpi scan of my stamp focusing on the "TWO" area showing a DT on RevHound's stamp. I don't see it in my copy and my scanner only goes to 1200. It is a lighter color however and it may just be difficult to see unless you all see something I don't? Where is/are the DT area(s)? I tried looking it up in Shift Hunters, but R6 is not listed. |

It's clearly the same position, but frankly I do not see a DT on either stamp and I collect DT's. I think the RevHound example is just a bit more overinked then the StateRev example. |

I was slightly hoping there was a DT, but was giving myself a headache trying to find it.
Glad to see I am not the only one who didn't see a DT (despite wanting to since I own it!). |
