You are partially correct! It is a 554C. As it is perf 11 and has two straight edges it must be a booklet stamp. |

Your stamp is about 1/4 perf out of alignment at the bottom of the gauge and also about 1/4 perf out of alignment at the top - in different directions. I think you will find a better match at 10 1/2 for the side perforations and thus you have a Scott 634d booklet single instead.
As a caution to Caper123's reply, 554 is flat plate printing and both sheet stamps and booklet stamps of 554 can have the same two adjacent straight edges similar to each other. Straight edges mean different things in different eras and on different stamps. |

Thank you for observations folks! I tried a different gauge to help me. I just cant squeeze the side into a 10 1/2, 10, 11 1/2. The closest is 11. This is a time I wished I had local Stamp Collectors. |

Instead of using a gauge, use another stamp of known perforation rate. Specifically, how do the sides align against one of the 1932 Washington bicentennials or one of the 1938 Presidentials? They are both perf 10.5 along the sides. |

Looks like you have to have a PHD for that precision gauge. but I do see it comes with a PDF instruction sheet. Since this has come highly recommended, I am going to buy one, I have the basic one but I started a huge project with my stamps and only want to check each stamp once (since I have over 15,000 stamps to do something with)

As Stallzer pointed out, for better accuracy in measuring perforations, using the Kiusalas Specialty Gauge is recommended. The Sonic Imagery Labs Precision U.S. Specialty Multi-Gauge is a good tool for this purpose. Perf. gauges use millimeter increments and the perforation production process used linear increments; which the Kiusalas gauge also uses. Post production issues such as paper shrinkage may effect perf. gauge measurements, more so than with the Kiusalas gauge, making perf. measurement more uncertain to determine at times.  |

It seems to match 11x11 stamp better, I'll reverse my 634 opinion and agree you have a 554. The point being that Scott rounds the perf measurement to the nearest half, which can be confusing - especially without having the stamp in front of the rest of us. (Also scans are better than photos for us too.) |

J.B. If only Stamps were like old treasure maps and X marked the spot. So,is that a 554C due to the wider version I have. My regular 554 is noticeably smaller. Just 2 more pictures to add to this post. Then, onward to the next stamps....   |

Also, please keep in mind that a perforation gauge is not a measuring tool. It is a gauge that indicates the count of complete perforations between lines two centimeters apart. The stamp showed by the OP is a 554c single. With few exceptions, US flat plate booklet pane stamps were printed on horizontal mesh (or grain) paper instead of the normal vertical mesh paper used for 400 subject sheet stamps to facilitate more accurate cutting of sheets into booklet panes. The resulting stamp is slightly wider and generally slightly shorter than a regular sheet stamp. A 595 on the other hand, was from rotary press coil waste. The plates were stretched to fit on the press cylinder. The resulting horizontal coil stamps were wider that flat plate stamps. The difference in width is larger than the small difference between flat plate booklet single and a sheet stamp. |
