That looks right, Dutch. The fourth stamp is clearly #24 but the LR ornaments look substantially complete so a good chance it's a Va. Would need to plate it to be sure. Well done! |

Dudley, I had mentioned this several months back and I think you'll remember. Look at the frame line below the "N" on the possible Va stamp, and you'll see that it curves upward. I've only noticed that on "E" reliefs and have never seen it mentioned anywhere.
Not that this is a huge discovery or anything but I think can be very helpful if the damaged relief at the top isn't visible due to perfs being too low.

Ray, I looked at my E relief stuff when you brought that up. I agreed there was something to it. It might not always be a simple case however. This stamp is 74R5, a D relief, position.
The type is also confirmed as a Type Va. |

Quote: i know you were talking to Dudley but not sure, whats does that mean, E relief? Dutch, you mentioned earlier that you are looking at Neinken charts. Do you have access to his complete book on the 1c 1851-1861 stamp? |

Dutch, you'll find that on the Type V and Va 1 cent stamps, that the transfer rolls had 6 different reliefs-- and identifying the reliefs are the first step to being able to start to plate these stamps.
A couple of years ago, I showed examples of the reliefs, with Type V and Va for each (except the E Relief-- I don't have a Type Va E relief).
The rows were laid out like this: First row: Relief A 2nd row: Relief B and so on for the first 6 rows, A through F. Then on the 7th - 10th rows it is Relief C, D, E, F again.
So each side of each plate has 10 Relief A, 10 Relief B stamps. 20 each of Relief C, D, E, F.
And likewise, you'll find twice as many of the CDEF relief stamps, compared with the A and B relief.
Hope this is helpful. To your original question, Relief E would be on the 5th or 9th row of the plate--- but your stamp was Relief D, and therefore 4th or 8th row of the plate. You'll see another Relief D that I just posted in a different Topic....
